How come nobody also mentions the fact that WS team lead league in homeruns? I tend to think Levine is bias to Cubs and is very overhyped as reporter as he reports all these phony trades. Hes kinda like the Sam Smith of baseball
I'm as avid of a Cubs fan as there is, and while Levine might have bias, his rumors have been spot on the last two years. Before that, not so much, but he has called a number of things recently before anyone else.

Sorry Dpauley I dont have the link, i had the actual paper. I wouldn't lie to you though. The paper was hinting that if the Mets struggled hitting (Outfield:Church, Murphy Sheff) that Minya would pursue Dye who he has always liked. It wasnt a big article just a tidbit, also hinted that we may be one of the teams that makes a run at Peavy.

    Well they should have pitching.

However, it looks like pitching + long ball more so than anything else to me. I'm not sure that's a great recipe for championship caliber success, but you never know.

I wasn't implying that they didn't have pitching, I think they will be fine their too but I meant more of the gritty and speed style that got them the title. People loved that team, they had no real egos and they busted their @ss on the field everyday. The long ball approach is pretty boring to watch and doesn't work on a daily basis. Plus the sluggers are usaully not the best fielders and take up a lot more payroll. If only JR spent on the bulls like he does on the sox.

I'm a die hard Cubs fan, but there's nothing else on so i'm watching the game.

1-0 Royals so far in the 2nd. Thome just led off the inning with a rope single against Meche.

Thome with a big 3 run jack with 2 dead in the bottom of the 8th. Looks like you guys will steal this one.

I can't believe the booed DeWayne Wise on opening day for fouling off a bunt attempt on 2-1. That's crazy. I guess the guy had fanned three times, but jeez.

Great game though, Meche must be pissed. To throw 7 innings of 1 run ball and not get a win is pretty poor. Decent crappy outing for Buehrle. Decent in that he gave up only 2 runs given that it felt like he was in trouble every inning he pitched.

Richard, Dotel, and Jenks did an nice job in relief. Can't believe Dotel struckout the side.

Buerhle was well Buerhle today just couldn't give them that extra inning. Getz is going to be a huge sparkplug for this team for the whole season. All in all a solid opening day win

Years ago I used to root for the Cubs to lose. Then I realized this was a waste of my valuable mental resources when I could use them rooting for the Bulls to win. I now have better focus over my mental powers.

This is probably why the Cubs have done so much better over the past few years with me letting up on them.

It shouldn't surprise you that much, Dotel's a strikeout machine with filthy stuff.

As for the game, what a great finish, a huge mistake by Trey Hillman though as you have to bring Mahay in to face Thome with 2 on and 2 out in the 8th. Wise looked awful (big surprise) and he was rightfully booed.

Maybe during the regular season your "anti cub" mojo has been less. But I have no doubts during the postseason it revs back up for you. That's the only thing that explains that last two postseasons for the cubbies.

I mean, cmon, it couldn't be that this team isn't built for the postseason and can't manufacture runs when it counts. right? RIGHT!?!?

Probably right on Dotel, I guess I shouldn't say "unbelievable" as much as "impressive". Obviously a great performance.

Wise was terrible, but still, booing a guy on opening day? That's harsh.

I'm not going to pretend to be a baseball expert, but I would think the Cubs would have been built pretty well for the post season given that they have good pitching through the first three starters.

    Touche.

You may have a point. As a cub fan, its what I cling to. The comforting thought that "once we make it in, our starters can go 7 or 8 innings strong and we have so many weapons on offense. How can we lose". Then in October, you witness all 3 starting pitchers come undone, and the offense goes M.I.A.

“We’re a very good team for [162] games, but we don’t do nothing after that,” Soriano said. “That’s the difference. We’re not put together for [a short series].”

Who knows. The entire season is made up of short series. Seems though, that the ones in October we don't handle very well.

If they're not "put together for a short series" then it's because their players are all chokers. I don't think it's the style of play though, and it's hard to determine what kind of guy is going to be a choker until they've had a lot of chances.

You'd think with great starting pitching through the first few spots that they'd be built perfectly for the playoffs. They also seem to have a potent offense, but everyone just goes MIA when it counted like you said.

Is everyone playing far worse than they did previously being built wrong? I don't know, I mean it's not like the Cubs are built solely around the long ball like the Sox were last year.

If the Sox didn't homer twice in a game they their winning percentage was really poor a season ago, and if they did homer twice it was really good. I mean that was almost entirely what it came down to. The Cubs didn't strike me as nearly that one dimensional.

I'd think they'd be good again this year too, but after last season, I think I'd enter the playoffs scared as a fan regardless of how well they do in the regular season. I thought they'd steamroll their way to the WS last year for sure, and then they got swept in the first round.

It's funny how much Cubs fans believe and accept in the curse. I was trying to convince all my Cub fan friends that they would make it to the Series, and all of them, to a man, said they were scared about getting out of the first round. I said that's ridiculous, but I suppose I was mistaken.

I think the weight of the media pressure about the "curse" hurts too. I don't think the players believe it, but they have to deal with the negativity unceasingly. It's like if I went up to you and said "wow you look sick" with a concerned look on my face 10-15x a day for 2 months. After awhile, you'd have to start thinking "what the hell is wrong with me?!".
