im talking about his years as a starter, where he has a long history of being terrible,with the sole exception of last year. I'd be fine with Dempster in the pen, because then we wouldn't be paying nearly twice what hes worth. even as a cub hes been average at best, hes had two seasons under 3.50, but he also had 2 seasons over 4.70, in what has been a fairly weak devision most of that time.

Well last year wasn't the sole exception. In 2000, he threw for 226 innings with a 3.6 ERA and 209 K's. Unfortunately, they kept throwing him for a bunch of innings for the next year or two when he was young and it taxed his arm causing him to have to have Tommy John in 03. After he recovered from that was when he started pitching solid again, so it might not have been that much of a coincidence.
