I read the Biggs article on safeties earlier today in the online Trib and I was surprised he said that this draft was thin on safeties. He drew the line at 2 really top safeties and then a severe drop off after that. The draftable safeties probably come from this list (from Walterfootball):

Haha Clinton-Dix*, S, Alabama
Height: 6-1. Weight: 208.
Projected Round (2014): 1.

Calvin Pryor*, S, Louisville

Projected Round (2014): 1.

Dion Bailey*, S, USC

40 Time: 4.66.
Projected Round (2014): 2-3.

Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
Height: 5-11. Weight: 193.
Projected 40 Time: 4.61.
Projected Round (2014): 2-3.

Craig Loston, S, LSU
Height: 5-11. Weight: 217.
Projected 40 Time: 4.63.
Projected Round (2014): 2-3.

Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 211.
40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2014): 2-3.

Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 198.
40 Time: 4.42.
Projected Round (2014): 3-4.

Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
Height: 6-0. Weight: 212.
40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2014): 3-4.

Ed Reynolds*, S, Stanford
Height: 6-1. Weight: 207.
40 Time: 4.57.
Projected Round (2014): 3-5.

Dezmen Southward, S, Wisconsin
Height: 6-0. Weight: 211.
Projected 40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2014): 3-5.

Tre Boston, S/CB, North Carolina
Height: 6-0. Weight: 204.
40 Time: 4.59.
Projected Round (2014): 4-5.

Antone Exum, S, Virginia Tech
Height: 6-0. Weight: 213.
40 Time: 4.59.
Projected Round (2013): 4-6.

Vinnie Sunseri*, S, Alabama
Height: 5-11. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2014): 4-6.

Kenny Ladler, S, Vanderbilt
Height: 6-0. Weight: 207.
40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2014): 5-7.

Isaiah Lewis, S, Michigan State
Height: 5-10. Weight: 211.
40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2014): 5-7.

Alden Darby, S, Arizona State

Nickoe Whitley, S, Mississippi State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2014): 5-7.

Sean Parker, S, Washington
Height: 5-10. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.62.
Projected Round (2014): 6-FA.

Ty Zimmerman, S, Kansas State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 204.
Projected 40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2014): 6-FA.

Hakeem Smith, S, Louisville

Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Projected Round (2014): 6-FA.

C.J. Barnett, S, Ohio State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 202.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Projected Round (2014): 7-FA.

My list would have Ward and Bucannon ranked higher but that's a quibble. My point is this--Is this draft truly so thin at safety that the Bears have to spend their first pick on one instead of the top DT (and we all know who that is)? Or to come at the question from a different angle--Is the defensive tackle spot so deep that a later round DT is a better value that a later round Safety?

I think that great teams are built from the lines out and until the big uglies are in place it really doesn't matter how good your defensive backs are.

I think it'd pretty average. Can find guys like Pryor/HHCD in almost every draft. Nobody jumps out as an amazing prospect at the position this year.

That is the hallmark of this draft.

It is deep with really good prospects, but few that are really special. Safety is not different than CB, LB, DT, TE, RB, QB, where no one in those groups is a WOW player.

But every draft is filled with guys who aren't WOW players who become star NFL players despite not being first rounders with recognizable names.

I like Bucannon and Brooks.

Exum is a CB.

It IS a thin draft for safeties. Maybe 15 draftable players at FS/SS total.

HHCD/Pryor are the top FS, and while they are really good, nobody is saying they're HOFers. They'll go in the 1st. I like Brooks, he's 2-3rd. I hear Bailey's name, too. Maybe a third rounder.

I like Ward/Bucannon, for sure, they are 1-2nd round SS. Hear Loston's name a lot, as well.

Those are the main guys. Drop off after HHCD/Pryor and then after the other guys I mentioned here. Maybe a few more.

It's super thin with a bunch of over hyped prospects.

I might get bashed but I strongly feel it's super thin.

a good reason for the bears not to be dead set ob a safety and reach in the 1st. It all begins with the lines anyway

I think Pryor is a special player, the only other special player besides Donald that the Bears realistically have a shot at with the 14th pick. If Donald is gone I'd love Pryor at 14.

i'm hoping there's a quality safety in the 3rd because that's where we'll get one

I feel like Pryor would be under much more scrutinity if there was better top end guys at the position. I think he's a little overrated and not the FS that we would need.

I think HCD, Pryor, Ward, Bucannon and Brooks all represent and immediate and significant upgrade.

I cannot ask anymore from a top 2 round pick.

I think the Bears are in a good position if they want to go safety.

They can stay at 14 and take Pryor/HCD who are both huge upgrades and start day 1.

Or if they can orchestrate a move down they can get Bucannon who may be a little more limited but also should start day 1.

I like this choice for a couple of reasons. One is that we would probably go with Donald at 14 (if he is there and I'm praying that he is) and two, Bucannon is my second favorite safety in this draft after Pryor. I like Ward too but he may too undersized for what Emery is looking for. As a DeKalb resident (my wife teaches at NIU) I got to see a lot of Jimmy and I like his game very much but in the hunt for a big, hard hitting safety the Bears have to have Pryor, HCD and Bucannon at the top of their list.

I'm taking Gilbert+Fuller+Dennard over any safety in this draft. Even guys like Roby and Varrett are more appealing to me.

Dennard will make a few pro bowls, i'm on record!!!!!!!!!

I really like Bucannon.

But with his physical upside I doubt he makes it to 51. His ability plus 10 turnovers last season teams like that skills set.

If the Lions move up to grab Watkins, HHCD will be there at 14, he should be the pick, even if Donald is available. IMHO

i think you take Donald over HHCD/Pryor. but we may have to trade UP in the 2nd to get Bucannon/Ward/Brooks. if we miss on Donald i could see trading DOWN and taking Hageman, then using that pick to trade back up to get a safety. might work.
