Damn that ump gets an assist in saving wacha and preventing the cubs from having a good inning...

Win or lose this game its refreshing to see Arrieta having a solid start, he already improves the rotation

3 position in cubs line up are killing them this year offensively...
2B 3B and RF.. just a little production from those 3 spots improves the offense dramatically.....

Junior Lake with 2 big hits off a tough Righty should increase his chances of staying in the lineup everyday

Dont tell no one but these guys are starting to look like a real baseball team.. good pitching hitting fielding and yes even a closer all turns into winning baseball.

For all the hand-wringing that's been going on about how this is basically the worst team ever, we're only 2.5 games back of the mighty Cardinals for 2nd place... :)

I don't expect it to be this way for the rest of the season... but maybe this team could end up being mediocre instead of atrocious by September...

Castro, Rizzo, and Castillo plus great starting pitching is getting it done. The bullpen has been good except a few that spoils it for all

Didn't Theo say that he'd rather be good or very bad. I think he said something like 70-82 wins is the worst possible outcome.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Minnesota United FC
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
For all the whining and crying I heard about wanting to win games...people are happy the Cubs are winning?

It will be easier now with Sweeney on the DL. They had to justify paying him a 2 year deal.

Here is a line up they should try:

Bonifacio .330/.376/.394
Kalish .255/.309/.333
Rizzo .296/.421/.520
Castro .313/.342/.473
Schierholtz .211/.229/.256
Lake .250/.280/.458
Valbuena .210/.364/.323 & Olt .156/.214/.359
Castillo .286/.333/.500

It has been at the point that they should push out who produces and cut back on who doesn't. Valbuena and Olt are lacking at 3B. Pretty bad. They need to be focusing on promoting up Bryant soon to Iowa.

They can control more than you think. The desire not to win 78 games could increase the likelihood that they'll trade certain players.

You will never hear me say that winning against the Cardinals isn't a good thing. Winning against the Cardinals to force them under .500 is even sweeter.

Thing is besides hammel and samardzija, their best players that are winning these games are ones they plan on being part of the future..

For me it was never about not wanting to win. It was about propping a team up with 30+ year olds to do it. I wanted to see the young players make it on their own. A team lead by guys under 27 who wins 70ish games is in a much better position than a team lead by 30+ year olds who wins a similar 70ish games. You could make the argument that if they had both they are a team in contention. And that is a reasonable argument. However, it's nice to see the young guys learn to win on their own because in a couple of years these guys will be the team vets.

Possibly but I can see them wanting to avoid the 20 win no man's land until they have a core group of players that they feel good about. Without more pitching prospects, it's hard to imagine them being at that point.

If the Cubs were smart, they'd also look to sell high on Castro and Rizzo.

Why ? Who would replace them ? All your gonna get in return is either a near end vet or young prospects.
Trading them now would be dumb on their part and they wouldn't get that "high" return you think they would.

If you think their good enough to net a "high" return then why wouldn't you keep a couple of young talented players on your own team ?
Makes no sense...
