90 year relationship with AM 720, and no World Series in that time :shifty:

Was it 90 years or that WGN was around for 90 years? I heard something that said WGN has been the broadcasters since 1959, but before stations like 560 WIND had the Cubs as the flagship. A lot of mixed up stuff out there right now I think.

The article said a 90 year relationship, but I wasn't around yet then, so...

If no one listened to the radio, they wouldn't even be carried by 780.

Btw, the confusion over the timelines might have to do with radio vs television.

The Cubs are irrelevant.

Aren't the Cubs ratings in general on both radio and tv down. They also do sell out as quick. Putting a losing ball club on the field continuously will drive ratings down.

Never was a fan of WGN radio tho once Santo was gone.

The ratings were so bad, WGN couldn't justify continuing the way things were going. So the presented the Cubs mgt with 5 possible alternatives. Apparently, the Cubs were butthurt so they shot them down. But yeah, declining ratings was specifically mentioned as the reason for WGN exercising their opt out.

I heard WBBM was #1 in revenue among chicago radio stations with just over $49 million last year. 720 was #3 with just over $22 million

A lot of people are bashing the Cubs for this, when in reality it was WGN that didn't try to match the offer.

In correct. Apparently WGN was able to opt out if the ratings were bad enough. So, the Cubs lack of success and resulting diminishing appeal were vere much responsible for this.

True. But the way some fans are seeing it is the Cubs are to blame for ruining a 'tradition' (whatever that is) with WGN. It's a smart move by WGN. Get out of there while you can, especially since you're not making money. Yes, the team is bad and has been bad. But it wasn't their decision to leave WGN, it was the stations decision to not match an offer.
