This thread was epic

Saad may be the best player 2 years down the road.....which road? The AHL road?

And Saad is untouchable....

Yeah, let's trade a 22-year-old player with Top 6 potential for a 30-year-old center whose back is held together by duct tape at this point. I don't see how that could backfire at all.

Huh? He had surgery when he tore his hip muscle early one year (but came back for the playoffs)

Minus that year....he's missed 10gms in his 10yr career?

Try again

Every postseason ends with a story about the myriad of injuries Kesler was hiding.

As does every team, every player, the longer a season goes on.

Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa have all missed more games than him

He's had hip and shoulder surgeries. And he's on the wrong side of 30. And, again, you want to trade for that using a 22-year-old with no such injury history.

Aside from that fact that it was financially impossible due to the salary cap, it makes zero sense for the Hawks long-term success.

First off, wasn't impossible.

He makes 5mil.

Trade Saad, Leddy (still had him) and not sign Richards.

Kane has had wrist and shoulder surgery.
Toews, concussion problems.
Sharp, knee surgery
Hossa, concussion, back issues.

Fact is, he's missed 10gms in 10yrs.

Also won a Selke. Also wins faceoffs. Also scores 20+ goals. Also netted 40. Also has played with Kane in the past.

Would have been the perfect second line center.

Yeah. But he's not 22!

Yeah, and then you have to move him in the 2015 offseason to clear cap space for the 15-16 season. Which means you lose a top 6 forward in Saad before the 2015 season and you lose another after it. And that's before all of the other players they'd have to lose. Instead, Brad Richards leaves after this season, and he didn't cost you an additional player.

Now, your response could be "that price is worth it for a title," and my response to that would be that I'm still sure the course that the Blackhawks front office actually took is going to work as well. And if I recall correctly, Saad wasn't the guy Vancouver demanded: it was Teuvo. And no, I wouldn't have included him in that deal, either.

No, you wouldn't have to move him.

How much do you think Saad is going to be demanding?

And this thread is would you include Saad, isn't t?

Yes, that is what I said.

If you put Kesler's $5.0 million cap hit on the books for next season, that gives him a roster of 9 forwards, 3 defensemen and 2 goalies that would combine for a total cap hit of $68.295 million. The salary cap is expected to be about $71 million. They'd have 14 of the 23 roster spots occupied with less than $3 million available for the final nine spots. There's no way they'd be able to afford to keep Kesler.

Right.

And Sharp can be moved. Bickell. Crawford's 6mil can be moved - there's 16mil

Wingers are easier to find than Selke winning centers.

If only the Hawks had one of those that wasn't a total waste of the captaincy, amirite?

And then the Hawks would be able to put Kesler vs Getlaf and have a better 2nd line matchup

So, as to not spend the rest of my day arguing this, you could make a damn good case for moving Saad in a deal that would've acquired Kesler. He certainly would've been great to have in Chicago. But they still may have found a way to put together a Cup-worthy team without having to let go of a guy that is still incredibly young with a ton of hockey skill.

But from everything I've reading now after a few Google searches tells me that the Canucks wanted Saad AND Teuvo in a deal for Kesler. That would've been too much, IMO. The Hawks can still win another Cup after this season, whether it be the the third or the fourth since the turn of the century.
