I'm not going to lie, I was furious when Appel didn't fall to us in the draft, but after seeing how he's been playing, I am damn happy we got Bryant.

His stats tonight: 1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, BB, 2 SO.

Since May 31 (7 games)

High A Lancaster

25.1 IP
37 ER
52 H

13.14 ERA
2.329 WHIP
.416 BAA

There really isnt any debate at this point.

The media tried to downgrade Bryant the entire time up until draft day and thats with some insane accomplishments to his resume. Appel was the best player in the draft going in for two years in a row, hardly something to sneeze at. Has Appel peaked? Who knows, but i will take the next Troy Glaus/ Dave Kingman over him every day of the week.

Appels issue was that, while he was supposed to have good stuff, he didn't miss many bats...and this was in college.

Given the dearth of power in MLB, the Cubs got the better end. But I actually liked the pitcher from Oklahoma more than Apoel.

2000
Hitters - Adrian Gonzalez, Luis Montanez, Rocco Baldelli, Dave Krynzel, Joe Borchard
Pitchers - Adam Johnson, Mike Stodolka, Justin Warne, Matt Harrington, Matt Wheatland

Adrian makes this a huge win for hitters and would have been more so with Rocco if not for I want to say, cancer?

2001
Hitters- Joe Mauer, Mark Teixeira, Chris Burke, Casey Kotchman, Jacke Gautreau
Pitchers - Mark Prior, Dewon Brazelton, Gavin Floyd, Josh Karp, Chris Smith

Major win for hitters again

2002
Hitters - BJ Upton, Prince Fielder, Scott Moore, Drew Meyer, Jeremy Hermida
Pitchers - Bryan Bullington, Chris Gruler, Adam Lowen, Clint Everts, Zach Greinke

Hitters again, but if you were to take the next five it's a big swing to pitchets with Francics, Saunders, Kazmir, Hamels, and late first rounder Cain

2003
Hitters - Delmon Young, Rickie Weeks, Chris Lubanski, Ryan Harvey, Nick Markakis
Pitchers - Kyle Sleth, Tim Stauffer, Paul Maholm, John Danks, Ryan Wagner

I'd say even

2004
Hitters - Matt Bush, Chris Nelson, Neil Walker, Billy Butler, Stephen Drew
Pitchers - Justin Verlander, Phillip Humber, Jeff Niemann, Mark Rogers, Jeremy Sowers

Pitchers win here

2005
Hitters - Justin Upton, Alex Gordon, Ryan Zimmerman, Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki
Pitchers - Jeff Clement, Ricky Romero, Wade Townsend, Mike Pelfrey, Lance Broadway

Hitters quite easily. Very top heavy AS type draft that year

2006
Hitters - Even Langoria, Drew Stubbs, Bill Rowell, Tyler Colvin, Travis Snider
Pitchers - Luke Hochevar, Greg Reynolds, Brad Lincoln, Andrew Miller

Hitters have an edge again, though the next three pitchers are Kershaw, Lincecum, Scherzer

2007
Hitters - Mike Moustakas, Josh Vitters, Matt Wieters, Matt LaPorta, Matt Dominguez
Pitchers - David Price, Daniel Moskos, Ross Detwiler, Casey Weathers, Jarrod Parker

Edge to the Pitchers

2008
Hitters - Tim Beckham, Pedro alvarez, Eric Hosmer, Buster Posey, Kyle Skipworth
Pitchers - Brian Matusz, Aaron Crow, Ethan Martin, Andrew Cashner, Josh Fields

Clearly hitters, but the last two pitchers are still jury out

2009
Hitters - Dustin Ackley, Donovan Tate, Tony Sanchez, Grant Green, Bobby Borchering
Pitchers - Stephen Strasburg, Matt Hobgood, Zach Wheeler, Mike Minor, Mike Leake

Pitchers walk away on this one

2010
Hitters - Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Christian Colon, Delino DeShields Jr, Michael Choise
Pitchers - Jameson Tailion, Drew Pomeranz, Brian Loux, Matt Harvey, Karsten Whitson

Edge to the hitters

2011
Hitters - Bubba Starling, Francisco Lindor, Javier Baez, George Springer, Brandon Nimmo
Pitchers - Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen, Trevor Bauser, Dylan Bundy, Archie Bradley

Too early to tell

2012
Hitters - Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, Mike Zunino, Albert Almora, David Dahl
Pitchers - Kevin Gausman, Kyle Zimmer, Max Fried, Mark Appel, Andrew Heaney

Too early to tell

Nice info. Ive linked an article before that shows that top 10 drafted pitchers bust way more then hitters. Pitchers in general bust more then hitters especially high school arms.

Thanks Brett....

I kinda had a feeling that the hitters succeeded better then pitchers for the most part.

Why it always surprises me when I see a team draft high school pitchers early, that really a crap shoot in my eyes

Guess we can agree then the cubs made the wise choices with going hitter first with their picks the last 3 years..

Not much of a debate, Bryant is a consensus 1, 2 or 3 prospect in baseball at this point, in the company of Buxton and Correa.

*Fangraphs, Sickels and Keith Law all have him at #1. BA and BP are 2 or 3 IIRC.

Only perspective we have right now is as of now. Right now, Bryant has been by far the better prospect.

May not, but right now I'm pretty darn satisfied... plus the whole premise of this thread is one against the other and all we have it what we have already seen, and so far it is Bryant all day.

You sat this as though Chicago could have chosen Appel. He was off the board when the Cubs picked. What you're saying applies to Houston in terns of discussing whether Appel or Bryant was the better choice.

Much of what I was saying before about the red flags over the perceived talent not matching actual results (namely not missing bats) was both more prevalent and more prominent the year before. Apparently he improved in this area during his senior year causing there to be less noise about this when Houston drafted him. And like I said, I don't think anyone can be faulted for passing on Appel. This seems lame to say this now, since it's after the fact but I also said it then too. If he wasn't missing bats in college, imagine what happens at the higher levels.

Man...WHAT HAPPENED to Mark Appel?

There's no way that the majority of this isn't mental at this point. He was absolutely filthy at Stanford.

No kidding! I have no idea how he has been so bad this year. This just goes to show you how hard drafting in any sport really is.

Don't even get me started with how scouts can actually try and project how a HIGH SCHOOL kid is going to play.
