1:54pm: The Cubs will receive a player to be named later in exchange for Barney, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times (Twitter link).

1:36pm: The Dodgers have acquired second baseman Darwin Barney from the Cubs, tweets Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune was the first to report that the two sides were close to a deal. (on Twitter). Barney was designated for assignment last week, though Cotillo noted earlier today that the defensive specialist was garnering trade interest.

Darwin Barney

The 28-year-old Barney hit just .230/.265/.328 in 217 plate appearances with the Cubs this season, but his bat has never been his calling card. Barney consistently rates as one of the best defensive second baseman in the Major Leagues, and this year was no different. His Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games was +15.5, while Defensive Runs Saved pegged him at +7 runs in limited time. Per DRS, Barney has saved 46 runs over the past three seasons.

Dee Gordon has established himself as Los Angeles’ everyday second baseman this season, so it doesn’t seem likely that Barney will be seeing everyday at-bats with the Dodgers. However, his glove makes him a nice bench piece that the team can use to improve its defense late in games. Barney was drafted as a shortstop and spent more time at short than at the keystone in his minor league career. Despite a lack of experience at the position in recent years, Barney could be used as a replacement if the team wants to either replace the defensively challenged Hanley Ramirez or shift him over to third base late in games.

Barney is earning just $2.3MM this season and is controllable through 2016 as an arbitration eligible player. His bat makes him a non-tender candidate in the offseason, but he will only cost the Dodgers about $804K from here through season’s end.

Least they got something for him.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Illinois Fighting Illini
Seems like a win/win. The Cubs get a player in return and Barney gets a fresh change of scenery. I hope he does well.

Would have to I would believe to cover his pay. Doubt anyteam would give up a player and pay Barney's full salary.

I don't expect much of a return. A ball arm at best.

I would've accepted a pair of socks, a bumper sticker, or golf lessons from Charles Barkley for Barney. But, a PTBNL is better then those. As long as I don't have to watch the most inept batter in the MLB in our lineup.

Don't think he was even the most inept batter on the Cubs.

Full time... Barney was probably the worst. Olt was horrible but never was full time, and Lake, well again not full time.

I'm not sure how you figure that. Barney started 55 games. Olt started 47 and Lake 60. They all had about the same amount of PAs.

This is who we got for Barney

35. Jonathan Martinez, RHP (6’1, 170, 20 years old)
Martinez was one of the Dodgers’ better international signings in the final years of Frank McCourt’s ownership reign. Martinez was signed out of Venezuela and debuted in the Dominican Summer League at age 17. He began 2013 with Great Lakes before getting demoted to Ogden. He was promoted back to Great Lakes and actually pitched better at full-season ball than he did in rookie ball. Martinez has an 88-92 MPH fastball that could tick up as he matures on the mound. He also has a slider that flashes solid-average potential and a changeup that could be at least average once he figures out how to be consistent with it.

He exhibits better-than-average control and command with his pitches. He has a little funk in his delivery that helps him to be deceptive. However, a significant drop in his strikeout rate in 2013 is concerning, especially since his ground ball rate didn’t improve much. He’ll need to figure that out as he advances. He spent most of his time with Great Lakes in 2013 and could either return there to start, with a promotion to Rancho Cucamonga. If not, he could begin with Rancho outright. It’d be a somewhat aggressive assignment for the 20-year-old.

2013 ranking: 49
2014 location: Low-A Great Lakes/High-A Rancho Cucamonga
ETA: mid-2017
