According to a report from the Sun-Times, the Cubs placed Starlin Castro on the bereavement list Wednesday night. Castro was a late scratch from Wednesday’s game after finding out a car crash in the Dominican Republic claimed the lives of members of his family and close friends. Castro has left the team to return home to the Dominican Republic.

According to the report from Comcast SportsNet, the Cubs will not release details of the accident out of respect for Starlin Castro and his family. The Cubs did not say how long Castro would be away from the team.

By placing Starlin Castro on the bereavement list, by rule, he can miss a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. If Castro requires more time, the front office has other options.

The Cubs will be able to fill his roster spot while he is on the bereavement list. The Cubs are expected to add a player to the active roster prior to the continuation of Tuesday’s suspended game Thursday afternoon (4:05pm CDT). Javier Baez is expected to play shortstop in his absence.

The front office has not announced the move to fill Castro’s spot on the active roster. Mike Olt was placed on the 7-day DL prior to Wednesday’s game and is not available. Josh Vitters was lifted in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game in Reno and replaced at first base by Jonathan Mota
