The Angels are going to need a short-stop next year. Haven't researched their system yet but they would love to get Alexi. The problem may very well be that across all of baseball there is a shortage of good pitching. There are a lot of ARMS around, but the ability to get ahead in counts and have an out pitch that is 80-90 certain to get a hitter to chase it is rare.
I get the feeling that too many young pitchers get schooled on the mechanics of throwing a pitch but are not schooled as much in control of their pitches. You can have a lot of movement on any pitch but if it ends up out of the strike zone or ends up in the middle of the plate, good hitter will win the battle way too much of the time. Nate Jones is a great example. He has one of the great arms ever for a White Sox pitcher. But he has never learned to control his stuff. He has four plus pitches but cannot consistently throw any of them out of the hitting zone with movement and still get a corner.
