We have all heard the story about how George Hallas liked the Illini, so thats how the bears got his navy and orange colors, but why did we choose the name "the bears"

Don't get me wrong, I love it. Bears are my second favorite animal, and a pretty mean and original name.

But does anyone know the true history or is this just a myth?

Before I answer, I really need to know what your first favorite animal is.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
George Hallas liked the Illini

He liked them so much, he went to school there.

His name is spelled Halas, no double L.

He wanted to name the team the Fighting Narwhals but that name was taken by the team from Washington D.C.

#1 narwhal
#2 bear
#3 Gardner snake

I ain't gonna lie, I had to google Narwhal. And no offense, but gardner snake is kind of a pussy animal to be ranked in your top 3.

The Bears used to play in Wrigley Field. It was common practice in the earlier days of the NFL for teams to adopt a nickname that was similar to their stadium cohorts.

Bears - Cubs: Wrigley Field

Football Giants - Baseball Giants: Polo Grounds

Lions - Tigers: Tiger Stadium

Boston Braves (Redskins) - Boston Braves: Braves Field

Really pussy animal? Do you realize how hard it is to live a LIFE with no legs? Just because Gardner snakes are non-venomous to humans does not mean they are "pussy"

Also the gardner snake is my 3rd favorite because we used to keep 1 in the basement because we had a mole problem. (my dad was allergic to cats"

I think bees are the best, they are very interesting in both how they work together and how they are essential to life as we know it.

Bears are cool though, it was neat to find out that there are only EIGHT species of bear. I would have thought there were a lot more. My favorite bear is the sloth bear.

Narwhals are cool as well, but I've never seen one in real life. I heard the eskimos make really good bacon out of narwhal but pretty sure it's illegal.

Out of your three though, I'm glad that Halas chose the Bears to be the name of this team.

Bees are eusocial, like football teams. In that sense, Trestman is queen bee
