Interesting list. Frey might be the most relevant to this year's Cubs discussion if for no other reason than, like this year's club, that team had young players and a ton of question marks going in. Eckersley and Sutcliffe were mid season pick ups that were able to be acquired because the team, and especially the pitching staff, overachieved early. Overachieving is something I normally give credit to the manager for and if Maddon were able to do something similar big trades to improve the club mid season become as likely in 2015 as they were in 1984.

From everything I've seen, the 84 Cubs were pretty loaded. What were the reasons why they didn't do as well in the years after?

They didn't start loaded though. They made a lot of moves. Going into the season Scott Sanderson and Steve Trout led the rotation, Dick Ruthven was the opening day starter, Eck was picked up in late May and Sutcliffe in June. There were some holes in spring training so Gary Matthews and Bob Dernier were picked up. The biggest thing that made that team though was that they went 20-8 in April and guys like Ruthven and Dickie Noles had improbably good starts in that stretch.

Yeah Maddon isn't making that list lol. Cubs would have to win 97 games.

Definitely expecting a big turnaround but not that much
