I dont think most people saw us being this bad before the season started
We wanted to buy into Emery, we wanted to buy into Trestman, anydany dissenting opinions there were in the minority
We had major holes at LB and S going into this season, plus a career pathetic DC coming off a historically bad season, and all of our free agent signings seemed to be focused completely on shoring up the run defense with no regard at all for pass defense aside from a washed up overpaid former great (Jared Allen). I don't think anyone expected much more than they got from this defense.
ST wasn't much better last year, and we did nothing to improve in that aspect, in fact we lost one of the best KR in the history of the game. No surprise that our D/ST suck.
But, as bad as I, and many other posters, thought Jay Cutler was, he has proven to be much worse than we ever dreamed. I see guys getting open, but Jay won't even look in their direction. I see pressure and Jay is too focused on some receiver that he's staring down on the sideline to step up in the pocket. Defenses just roll their coverage to where Jay is looking, and he hasn't figured out how to look off coverage, pump fake, hit receivers in stride, with room to run, etc. This is like watching Grossman all over again. High hopes, flashes of dominance, but ultimately unable to sustain success once defenses study film and figure out his glaring weaknesses. If he hasn't figured it out by now, he never will. Cut the bum.
Would like to see Emery get another chance with a defensive minded coach and a new QB. I think he has done a good job in the draft, which is the hardest thing to do. But the huge mistake he made in signing Cutler to a massive contract might be enough to end his tenure in Chicago.
