I bet Emery and Trestman both wish they had McCown now

Bears had a chance to keep McCown as the starter but Tres kept saying how Jay's the starter once he comes back from injury. We don't know ultimately who's decision that was (Emery, Tres, higher up)? Who know's? I know it sounds like a broken record but McCown was sure lighting it up... made us even forget about how bad our defense was. :smh:

For the price yeah probably. McCown probably would have performed just as good or better than Jay up until this point but for a heck of a lot less money.

From a contract standpoint? Yes.

However, the logistics wouldn't work. With Jay, there were two options - franchise him or sign to a long term deal. Neither one addresses the REALITY of the Josh McCown situation.

McCown was NOT coming back as a back up. Tampa was willing to make him a starter and give him starter money - almost $5M per year. He's played like shit.

Another option would have been to let Jay go and sign McCown as the starter. That doesn't get you closer to a SB. He's a 36 year old journeyman.

Remember, the offense was ranked 2nd in the league. Jay as the QB was the RIGHT thing to do (you can argue contract v. franchise tag), but remember, the offense worked last year. This would be the second year in the system. The running narrative was - if the Bears had just a middle of the road defense, it's a playoff team.

except that Jay produces way too many 3 and outs, and with incredible frequency. McCown could look around at different options (yep, Jay still, after 9 years, cannot) and at least get something out of 1st and 2nd down such that drives were lasting longer. when that happens and you are producing points, too, which Josh was, you are keeping your crappy defense off the field and, ideally, playing with a lead.

w/Jay under center, 3 and outs over and over, or turnovers (take your pick, both have been a regular sight w/JC), putting said crappy D back on the field leads to no leads and losing, forcing Cutler to force it even more... hence, Jay's performance, the teams record and his benching.

of course we need better D, and we all know changes are inevitable on that side of the ball, but Green Bay's D is not good, either, but they are made better by the notion that the offense is going to give them a lead to w/which to be more aggressive; at the very least, their D knows Aaron and the O will keep them in it.

not so with Jay Cutler. the obvious call was to franchise him to see how he performed in the 2nd year of offense, in a year he would be playing for something, to prove he was worthy of a contract, and without overcommiting so much coin to a guy that had yet to prove anything!

The offense worked last year with McCown, who had a 109 passer rating. The offense was bad last year with Cutler, who only posted middle of the road numbers after immense stat padding.

Except this isn't true. The offense also sputtered under Mccown while we lost to damn near every NFC team and got a lucky break that Rodgers got hurt

The offense scored more points, the turnovers were down 80%, and MCown went 3-2 while Cutler went 5-6.

Once again, every thing you say is false or irrelevant.

You're both right.
