except that Jay produces way too many 3 and outs, and with incredible frequency. McCown could look around at different options (yep, Jay still, after 9 years, cannot) and at least get something out of 1st and 2nd down such that drives were lasting longer. when that happens and you are producing points, too, which Josh was, you are keeping your crappy defense off the field and, ideally, playing with a lead.
w/Jay under center, 3 and outs over and over, or turnovers (take your pick, both have been a regular sight w/JC), putting said crappy D back on the field leads to no leads and losing, forcing Cutler to force it even more... hence, Jay's performance, the teams record and his benching.
of course we need better D, and we all know changes are inevitable on that side of the ball, but Green Bay's D is not good, either, but they are made better by the notion that the offense is going to give them a lead to w/which to be more aggressive; at the very least, their D knows Aaron and the O will keep them in it.
not so with Jay Cutler. the obvious call was to franchise him to see how he performed in the 2nd year of offense, in a year he would be playing for something, to prove he was worthy of a contract, and without overcommiting so much coin to a guy that had yet to prove anything!
