either way things like this show the cubs are improving and whether it is this year or the next, they will be competing very soon. its going to be exciting to have a team that will not only be good again, but good again for potentially a decade +

Unfortunately, so many fans now expect a WS that they will be bitching and whining this year. These were the same ones who didn't get the rebuild, and bitched about too many losses and didn't see the plan or the progress. And now it won't be fast enough, even though 2015 is essentially a "bonus" year if we contend.

I look forward to seeing young players with potential, who are exciting to watch. (even if they are also frustrating). This just represent such a departure from 2013 when you couldn't look at many on the team as a future piece. Now we can.

I think it's possible they make the playoffs, though it will take some luck. But I am looking forward to some fun in 2015, playoffs or not.

Sweet... now if we can just find a player that can win the cubs 2-3 more games, we win the division. I love baseball on paper. Cheaper than going to the games too.

Didn't you post this exact thing on another thread?

Nice hit there SilenceS

It was a roller coaster of emotion. I actually thought I lost the bet because of the Raptors game. They were down 90 To 77 with like 48 second to go. I turned off the game. About an hour later I catch the final score and I see they somehow lost by 6. Also, two hockey games almost gave me a heart attack. lol

84 wins seems in the realm of possibility. Or I should say, it's within the number I expect for the Cubs to make the next step.

The Cubs won 73 games last year.

I don't think it's total fantasy to think they can up that to 86 or 88. I think, obviously, 81-84 is more realistic. But is 86 or 88 out of reach?

They improved 7 games from 2013 to 2014 - what did they add? Arrieta for 2/3 of a season? Hendricks for 1/2? Don't forget they also lost Shark for 1/2, and didn't win his very winnable starts anyway, due to offense and bullpen, both of which are improved. And they'll add 1/2 a season of Hendricks again. And 1/3rd of Arrieta. And some other guy they picked up.

What are the odds a team could go from 73 wins one year to a pennant the next?

Well, 3 times in just the past ten years teams have gone from fewer than 73 to the pennant. And we're not even talking winning the pennant - we're talking contending for the playoffs.

It's not fantasy. It will take things going right in a lot of areas, and they don't have much room for error. Injuries could easily derail them. (Then again, they lost each of their two best players for a month last year due to injury.)

Contending in 2015 is very realistic.

Since 2000, 116 teams have won 73 or less games and 9 have made the playoffs the following year for a percentage of 7.76%. That is not taking into account the offseasons of those clubs nor the issues they may have had to put them at the 73 or less threshold prior.
