Jerry Reinsdorf said one of the nicest things about Ernie. It was something along the lines of that it wasn't Mr Cub that was lost it was Mr Baseball.

Got me to thinking, who would you say is Mr. Baseball now that Ernie has passed? I don't think you can choose a current player (like a Trout) or a recently retired player (like a Jeter) for the crown. Who would you say is the ambassador type now?

Guys....it's easily Ripken. Dude is nothing but an ambassador for the game, plus he started his own youth league that is pretty big. Put all of that together with his commentary during the playoffs.

Solid lock.

Yeah, It's either Ripken or Scully for me.

The problem with Scully is that he didn't play (or maybe he did and was just forgettable). You need somebody who has played the game, imo, and it needs to be a glamor position like shortstop. That's why I argue for Ripken, with Ozzie Smith being a not too distant second. I like that choice as well.

Ripken did not start his own league. Ripken is Babe Ruth League for 12 and under. However, I don't want to make that sound like a negative. Ripken would be a solid choice for that Mr. Baseball moniker. There are several solid choices in this thread. I wasn't sure there would be any when I read Brett's OP.

Agreed on Scully. He never even played MiLB.

My bad. I just assumed it was his own that he started.

I should mention, I call shortstop a glamor position because my buddies and I all wanted to be shortstops. I just associate it that way.
