WLS AM 890 has won the right to broadcast Chicago White Sox baseball games starting next season, according to Chicago media reporter Robert Feder. The White Sox current deal with WSCR 670 The Score expires this year and WLS has beat out the current home for the Sox as well as WGN. A deal is expected to be finalized this week with financial terms not available. Feder writes:
Peter Bowen, vice president and Chicago market manager of Cumulus Media, declined to comment. But the White Sox deal is believed to be part of a plan to revive the moribund station of Big John Howell, Jonathon Brandmeier, Rush Limbaugh and Steve Dahl. The latest Nielsen Audio survey shows WLS in 29th place with a 1.1 percent share and a cumulative weekly audience of 343,600. Revenue declined 27.5 percent last year.
WSCR The Score has been home to White Sox broadcasts since 2006 and extended the deal with the team through this season in 2010. Now with the White Sox on the move, the Cubs could be as well. The Cubs could find a new home at WSCR The Score as their current seven year deal with WBBM 780 allows for a one-time relocation to The Score in 2016. It's something to keep an eye on. Check back when the deal for the White Sox is officially announced.
