This means the Hawks have to be adding some goalie prospects with the Bickell/Sharp/Versteeg/whoever trades, right? The farm looks rather barren right now.

I don't think it necessarily means that if this is just his rights and they knew that they weren't bringing him over anyway. They could still bring in goalie prospects, but I don't think that would be exclusively related to this trade.

Because there is a chance he can compete for an NHL role with the Oilers.

It seemed quite clear that there isn't that option for him with the Hawks. I'd be surprised if his deal isn't similar to Panarin's in that if he doesn't make the NHL, he can go back to the KHL. He left because he doesn't want to be in the AHL.
