Do they have a 4th?

Not really but drafting and developing your own talent is something good organizations do and we will see how this works out. The Packers stuck with Sam Shields for a couple years while he was pretty bad before he turned into a solid CB.

No respect for Devonte Hurst?

Is he still on the team?? He did some good things a couple of years ago but i didn't hear his name at all last year.

McManis played the nickel for the first 6 games but he sucked so Calahan took over till week 13 when he hurt his quad, Hurst played nickel weeks 15 and 16 till Calahan came back for week 17. Bears website still has him on the roster.

Who are the Bears backup CB's?

I have faith in Fox/Fangio/Donatell but we sure are taking some chances in our secondary next season. We have some kids that look intriguing but clearly have question marks.

Backup CB isn't quite the same as who's on the field as NB and DB.

Some DBs aren't well suited to be "outside CBs", but are well suited for the Fangio mix of Safety, NB, DB. The two on the field CBs tend to be taller, faster, better playing the ball and man-coverage.

Still, it's quite common for the "3rd CB" to get NB duty, mainly for valuable game experience. But sometimes they're held out for strict "outside CB" training and backup for the outside CBs. We see less of this, and it's less likely with Fangio's type of D.

I think the "outside CB backups" to Fuller and Porter are definitely undermined at this point. If Fuller or Porter go down, I predict it'll be (in this order):

  1. Hall - 6'2", 4.55 40dash, has the ball skills, size & run defense, but speed a concern for outside.
  2. Callahan - 5'10", 4.47 40dash, played good CB in college, scouts thought too short & slow for NFL, but played well as NB last year (same 40dash as Fuller). A bit short 5'10" (but 5'8" Jennings had a probowl year).
  3. Taveze Calhoun - 6'1" UDFA, has the ball skills, considered poor run defense and too slow (4.48 40dash). Classic 'outside CB specialist' so to speak. Has decent chance to make team.
  4. Houston-Carson - 6'1" 4.54 40dash, considered as potential Safety, played safety senior year, CB first 3 years, has good ball skills and height, considered a bit slow for outside CB, but certainly can work with that speed.

For NB and DB I predict (in this order): Hall, Houston-Carson, Callahan

I leaning towards this CB roster (7): Fuller, Porter, Hall, Houston-Carson, Callahan, McMannis, Calhoun.

I think someone said it the other day, as long as "Sherrick McManis" isn't on the field for defense consider that an upgrade.

I'm more concerned to have 2 solid starters. First answer that came to mind was 'all of them.'

You say taking some chances like there is a choice. Goddamn, nothing has changed. Bears are restocking the bare cupboards left by JA. Having this many question marks slated to start is not by design. I thought we all got that by now.

If Fuller or Porter go down, we really don't have any proven outside CB to replace them. Even the rookies aren't prototypical outside CB, more NB and Dimebacks, so to speak.

Hard to find many teams that have proven CBs in backup roles that are not long in the tooth.

Hall is a prototypical outside CB the question is how long or will he ever be nfl ready. I do wish we signed someone like Chris culliver only concern is does he still has injury problems.

I hope they're worse than the starters otherwise we're screwed if we stay healthy.
