It's the media, which have about the same hockey cred as your average hockey board poster (keep in mind HF50 is considered an average hockey board poster). Thus, it's a popularity contest pure and simple. Sometimes they get it right, like Keith, but other than that take it with a grain of salt.
The only difference is that I'm not sure how many times Crosby has/will go on record saying Kessel should have won it. Kane said it multiple times Crawford should have won it.
