Still. That's more than enough horsepower to get a decent ROI in project computing TODAY, let alone when you got it whenever that was.

The Vive is badass. I'm holding off on Dirt Rally to postpone my heart attack.
I got my ass kicked by a kangaroo looking critter in ping pong. Slapped some shit off my desk. I gotta reconfigure setup.
It is pretty freaky not unlike (so I'm told) a really good trip. I had to gingerly tiptoe my foot on the ground just to make sure I wasn't stepping off a cliff in Everest VR and Cloudlands Mini Golf.

Its so fucking insane to me that there is really no full on proper AAA game for vive or rift. I been saying it for a long time now, but those companies are fucking fuckwat fucks for not developing at least one big title in parallel to the hardware. So fucking stupid to the point where they have jeopardized the platform.

Imagine, just one ONE game of say Witcher 3 caliber on vive or rift. Fuck, even some ports. They would have done 10x the sales.

Specs and promises don't sell systems. Games do. If you don't have the titles, your shit don't sell. Just ask PS vita or wii U.

And now, cause the weak platform sales, there aren't any major devs willing to risk the investment of a proper AAA title. None of the big studios are developing for rift or vive right now. Fuck, it might be sony with PS VR that saves the platform because at least they are supporting it with exciting titles.

i still think that while vr might really prove to be valuable in other fields, when it comes to gaming its going to remain something of a gimmick. its been around for a long long time and has never taken off, and even in the past when the "tech wasnt there," the tech was still the best of the day, and at the time vr was just as impressive and just as mind blowing(remember descent in vr?) and yet it always remained a gimmick. its kind of like motion control imo, its cool for a little while because its new but then people lose interest. ive talked to a number of gamers and a lot of them simply dont want to wear a device on their head for hours on end during a gaming session. theres a lot that do as well, but i dont think the numbers favor vr.

and this brings me to your point about a AAA title. devs havent made one because the money isnt there. there arent enough devices out there to justify spending the millions of dollars that developing such a games costs. and unlike a console were the manufacture takes the loss in hopes that a console seller will drive sales and further software will turn profits thats simply not the case for vr because not only do people need to buy the vr device, they also need a capable system as well. thats simply a lot of money most people dont care to spend or simply cant afford. especially when that money can go towards things that will give you a better experience imo such as a better GPU and/or monitor. which brings me to final problem regarding developing a AAA title for vr, it would require a non VR version as well in order to justify the cost, and as a result that would only hurt vr further since the vast majority of people would simply buy/play the standard version of the game.

I had the rift DKs, and the thing about it, after an hour or so of playing, you get it out of your system. The thrills are gone, and it does become a gimmick. One that can give you headaches and make you feel nauseous if the environment isn't built perfectly(and even then, you can still feel ill).

It's one of those things that will resurface every few generations as the next great thing. But wont be a staple in gaming for a while yet. Too many hurdles. But it's nice to have the accelerometer software breakthroughs.

Which is why I was saying rift/oculus should have funded development themselves. The platform is desperate for a killer title.

And make no mistake, VR is not a fad. It may take longer than people thought a year ago, but its not going away. Just wait until there is a VR next gen world of warcraft. People are gon go bonkers when it gets here.

The VR stuff out there is kinda cool, but I have to ask.... is it really VR when you are just wearing a device on your face?

You kind of see and hear the environment, but you can't feel it.... can't smell it.... etc

I imagine some real VR in the future would be some shit that taps into your brain to manipulate the dream system in ur head so you genuinely have a VR experience.

I am not saying the current VR tech won't get better and be fun, but what I'm really saying is dream VR porn would be a trillion dollar industry lol

Member scratch and sniff? Why can't we harness that technology today?

i think vr very much is a fad. companies are going to put all this time and effort into it and its never going to take off with gamers mainstream. not imo. like i said, in other fields it will prove valuable, but when it comes to gaming its not going to take off enough to be anything more than a niche market.

I just cannot imagine a game type right now that I would prefer to put a VR thing on and play in this pseudo VR rather than on a console or gaming PC.

Welp, I know what I'm doing next week.

Picked up 6(12 drives total, girly picking up half to get past the purchase limit). If all drives work on arrival, it will finally be time to replace an 8gb raid-z project file server(16x 1tb drives in mirror for reliability) that was built in 2009.

Question:

Checked CPU-Z on whim the other night. Noticed my DOCP profile for my RAM mysteriously got reset to manual. Had it configured to run at 1600 MHz with CAS 11. Was running around 1000 MHz with CAS 11. Don't remember the last time I even went in BIOS, nor were their any hardware swaps. I did unplug my computer when out of town last week, so I suppose the lithium battery could be dying.

Any ideas?

Could be battery or maybe it's slightly loose, could have been a softlock in bios that reset it, could have been a minor power surge. Could also be an unstable configuration for the ram and settings are reverted to safe probes. It's all guessing without being able to test it.

Aye. The i/o cluster in the middle of the board though. Would make for some sweet cable management.

Small potatoes, but may as well keep the discussion going.

Ordered parts last week that are en route for delivery now. Doing two upgrade-builds for family as a little easter surprise.

With a preferred customer discount from someone I've done tons of business with over 25 years and an expiring store credit, I wound up getting 2x g4620s retail + 2x MSI Z270-A PROs + 2x single stick 16GB ram for $410ish out the door. Credit was $60 for price drops from a previous purchase, so technically $470, but whatever. Newegg/amazon both have the same config listed at $590. I'm not going to beat that for new parts. Builds will be complete in less than an hour including nuke/pave, saves me the hassle of listening to awkward family chatter, so that might be worth it alone. Plus one is going from a 4GB 140watt CPU(IIRC) to this 51watt TDP, so a worthy upgrade.

Optane memory, while promising, is such a gimmick right now. I threw one into my wife's system, and it was no better than when I experimented with cheap SSD swap drives, and raid swapping dirt cheap SSDs are even better right now. The only thing we can hope for, is real world matching *half* ALT claims. Although knowing this pony, no ram chips have ever reached anything close to theoretical life, outside of solid state relay arrays.

My hopes was that we could take a board loaded with SATA ports, throw even a coffee lake celeron on there, 8gb ram, and optane memory. Just have a sleeper low power local file daemon and home automation (IoT) server with an easy upgrade path.
