Now what exactly ruined the 46 D? Was it Walshs west coast offense?

IMO, it was a bit of that but also offenses going more spread out. The Dolphins in '85 were kind of the microcosm of what helped kill off the 46 as a base package. You can(and it still is used) as a concept today but as offenses became more and more spread out 3-4 WR sets, shotgun, etc it become more difficult to manufacture pressure with the 46 and not get shredded on the back end.

The 46 wasn't really "ruined" in my estimation. It, and it's concepts, just had to evolve the way everything else in the NFL has.

RIP.

I still shed a tear when watching the scene on 30-for-30 where he writes the letter to his former players.

It just seems trivial/petty/rude I don't know the right word to use.. But have at it I guess.

what's the difference in saying the same exact things when he is alive...is it less trivial/petty/rude?

Now what exactly ruined the 46 D? Was it Walshs west coast offense?

I'm not into the X's and O's like a Rory or FT, but it was the quick passes that were able to skirt around the pressure I guess. running the ball was a huge thing still back then, if a team conventionally went to run the ball, one of the Bears D is going to smash somebody. and if you went to pass, like a little deeper ball, the offensive lines couldn't hold protection enough when you had the 46 formation so heavily stacked. as Singletary put it in the 85 Bears SB it'll become 1 on 1 between defense and the QB, and typically the 46 D always won that battle. :p

I never watched the Dolpins game from that season fully, Marino tore that ass up though.

I read some article a few years back about Ray Lewis and how he said running in the 46 was the most fun he had of his career. this was when Rex Ryan was DC.

another stat I found was when Ryan was with the Jets and they were actually making the playoffs and shitting on the Patriots heads every year, I think they ran 46 like 20% of the time or something?

RIP Buddy.

Ryan wasn't a bad coach but it's easy/amazing to see how many bad coaches got hired in his era. For an NFL Head Coach to have zero idea of offensive strategy or even the playbook is pretty insane. Just a very interesting era of coaching hires.

Ryan's comments about "running the God damn ball" because he had no idea about offense reminded me of Trestman's press conferences after he was hired and hearing the huge disparity in how his comments about the defensive side of the ball sounded compared to the offensive. I still remember posting here that it was a bit concerning to hear him stumble his way through questions about the defense.

and then there was Lovie, who knew so much about offense, too. don't forget about his offensive track record as HC.

oh, it was offensive, alright!

Link?

I'd be interested to read that.

Sorry, no link. This was something Parcells said on TV about 7-8 years ago when he was a member of one of those Sunday morning pregame shows. He explained the basis for his comment was due to the fact that every defense in the NFL still utilized concepts from Ryan's defense. That comment just stuck in my head b/c it was such high praise coming from him, especially since they hated each other when they were coaches (recall Parcells calling Ryan a neanderthal who attracted neanderthal players, lol).

Ryan's tenure in Philly was interesting. The team was terrible before Ryan got there, and he improved the talent level immensely on both sides of the ball. The defense obviously got better. Ryan's undoing was Randall Cunningham's consistently terrible playoff performances. Kotite was elevated to HC because he was an offensive guy, and the Eagles owner thought that Kotite could provide enough offense to get the Eagles a championship.

Remember the fogbowl?

Rest in peace in that big super bowl in the sky Buddy. I always loved the story about him showing the defense film of other teams trying to run the 46 and failing, then afterwards telling them were going into the next room for milk and cookies. That shit made me laugh so hard but its the sort of things that were endearing.

Truth is Buddy told Randall......."just make 3-4 big plays a game and the "D" would do the rest".

Buddy was clueless about "O" ( he hated the Oilers' R&S "O"). But he was 1 of the greatest defensive minds ever.

He was the perfect Philly coach for that era. They were a bad team and he came in, called out the Cowboys and had his squad ready to fight every week. I agree he let the offensive side falter the team, but the further we get from those teams the more i realize that he did as good of a job that he could.
