The Houston Texans' most valuable asset is in danger of missing the entirety of training camp.

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt underwent back surgery on Wednesday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the situation.

Watt will open camp on the physically unable to perform list, per Rapoport, but the team is hoping he will be ready for the start of the regular season. Rapoport added that the recovery time is 6-8 weeks, and since the surgery happened so recently, it puts Watt right up against the opening weekend kickoff.

NFL Media's Mike Garafolo, however, expressed a slightly more pessimistic timeline. Per a source informed of Watt's prognosis, Garafolo reported that the recovery could take up to 10 weeks, which means the defensive star would miss regular-season games.

Bobby Massie getting a big break, along with Cutler if this prolongs...

I have been saying this since the schedule came out. No one took me seriously.

Looks like news just broke about his back... wonder what happened for him to wait so long to get it fixed. Unless it's a workout injury

He'll probably play but sounds like he'll be less than 100%. Imagine Grassu trying to block him at 100%. Or Leno. Or Whitehair in his first start.

The Bears have never defeated Houston. It's about freaking time

It does not look like he is going to play, out a minimum of 8 weeks per Rapoport. Reports also that he won't be 100% healthy until mid season.

the Bears have never beaten the Texans.

I'm letting this sink in, and so should you.

You've been talking about a back surgery that happened this week? Tell us more and then follow it up with your trifecta for the weekend races at Maywood since you can predict the future.

It was his second back surgery this offseason... Also... he had groin surgery in January... (plus he broke his hand in week 14)

Sadly... it looks like JJ's body is giving out faster than the NFL world would like... The dude is probably my favorite defensive player in the league.

In the long storied history of the Bears/Texans rivalry the Bears have never won.

0-3 all time.

Name an offensive lineman that it does favor

None.

That's why it doesn't make sense to look forward to a matchup of player x vs watt. Unless, of course, you're a Houston fan.
