One, the Cubs as an organization don't care about individual games as much as the fans do. That's just the truth.

Two, the idea was to give your starters breaks so that guys like Jake, Hammel, and Hendricks aren't running on fumes in mid October. You don't wait until your pitchers are tired to rest them, you rest them now. It also means they're less likely to suffer from an injury due to fatigue.

Three, I highly doubt the Cubs thought a guy brought off the scrap heap was going to have much value (if any). I think they were just trying to save their starters a start.
