You haven't been paying attention.... huge drama in tonight's swim between the US and Russia in women's breast stroke.

Yeah I saw that with King and Efimova but I was like meh. Hard to get all excited when the Russian team as a whole is pretty bad these days compared to what they once were.

The Phelps rivalry with that South African dude is probably going to be the highlight tonight.

Rio 2016 : Olympic security chief attacked after opening ceremony before knife-wielding robber shot dead by police

The Rio 2016 Olympic games have been rocked by more trouble after it emerged the Olympic security chief had been attacked after he left the opening ceremony.
The Olympics security chief was attacked as he left the Games opening ceremony by a knife-wielding robber who was shot dead by a cop.
Felipe Seixas was walking to his car near the Maracanã Stadium early on Saturday when he was set upon by four men brandishing knives.
A policeman with him shot one of the assailants dead and the others fled.
Authorities have attempted to hush up details of the shooting, which is a monumental embarrassment to crime-plagued Rio 2016 bosses.
The security chief himself became a mugging target after committing 10,000 security forces to protect the extravaganza.

"With his 12th individual Olympic title Michael Phelps equal the all time Olympic record set by Leonidas of Rhodes in 152 BC, 2,168-year-old years ago.

leonidas-statue.jpg

Leonidas of Rhodes won 12 titles in the second century B.C. A renowned runner, Leonidas won three events -- the stadion, a sprint; the diaulos, a longer run; the hoplitodromos, a run performed while wearing armor -- in four straight Olympiads. He is believed to have won more Olympic titles than anybody at the ancient Olympic games.
If we're being technical, Phelps is alone with the record for most gold medals -- they didn't give out gold medals at the ancient Olympics, instead giving athletes a crown of olive leaves. He'll pass Leonidas for most Olympic titles (medals or wreaths) if he wins either of his two other individual events, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley."

Anyone see the stuff about how the Olympics are supposedly very sexist?

All the examples they give seem very petty or misconstrued....

Bears DLman Mitch Unrein's wife won a medal and the Tribune reported it in that context and people took it as "Oh so it only matters because she is the wife of a Bears player?"

Some female swimmer won a medal and the announcer said something about how important her husband was to her victory, apparently because some shit happened where she couldn't/wouldn't get out of bed and he had to work to get her back out there and swimming..... but they took it as the announcer was crediting it all to the husband.... which is not what the dude meant, but ok.

There were also claims that in general the coverage leans towards showing Men rather than women.... which I have not noticed.... I see more women's events in prime time than men's.... I've seen more women's events period than men's....

Anyone else catch this and agree/disagree with it?

I disagree, but people see and hear what they want to I guess. (and media needs ratings so it's always smart to generate a "controversy")

I disagree with the claim that the Olympics and the coverage is just blanket sexist.

Like I said I have watched and cheered for more female event wins by the U.S. than Men's
