They didn't spend a bunch on ILB this offseason, did they?

Side note: if that's really you in your avatar you look exactly like one of my cousins, facial hair and everything.

Don't know. He still looks late on quite a few plays. Once he gets to where he wants to go he hits well, though.

My top five:

1. Howard - no questions asked.

2. Hicks - Best player on the defense

3. Whitehair - Will be in the pro bowl this season

4. Freeman - One of the few defensive players who didn't mail it in last year.

5. Floyd - Could have an awesome year.

Honorable Mention/Sleepers:

Long - Awesome when healthy
Sitton - same as above
Cohen - Adds a dimension seldom seen in football
Goldman - Awesome when healthy once again.
Amukamara - Key to the entire secondary.

Surprised Leno isn't in your top 5.

"The Chicago Tribune's Dan Wiederer dropped by the CSN studio to rank the top five players suiting up this year:

5. Prince Amukamara, CB

Wiederer's take: Terrific offseason, high hopes on what he can bring to secondary.

4. Josh Sitton, OL

Wiederer's take: Proven and understands exactly what it takes to win in this league.

3. Akiem Hicks, DE

Wiederer's take: Defensive MVP a season ago, durable.

2. Leonard Floyd, OLB

Wiederer's take: Had a very strong camp, could be a breakout year if he can stay healthy.

1. Jordan Howard, RB

Wiederer's take: Had a huge rookie campaign, gotta be at the top of the list."

What are your guys thoughts on this list? Is Amukamara one of the top 5 Bears players? No freeman or Long?

While I think this list is off, it's still interesting to compare it to our top 5 paid players:

1) Glennon 14M
2) Long 8M
3) McPhee 7.8M
4) Prince 7M
5) Houston 6.99M

Freeman definitley deserves to be in the top 5. He may have been the best players on the Bears last season next to Jordan Howard.

1. Howard
2. Freeman
3. Hicks
4. Sitton
5. Whitehair

All these guys are Pro-bowl-esque players at their position. Guys like Mcphee, Goldman, Floyd, and Meredith have all flashed, but need to show consistency. If Trubisky gets to play and performs well, he will undoubtley elevate the play of his teammates. I could see a scenario where the Bears get 5+ guys on the pro-bowl if health doesn't play too much of a factor.

I think this is probably my top five as well especially if Whitehair can have another season like he had last year and Floyd can continue to not only do what he did last year but take another step.

That's a good list.

Of course, if we're assuming all the players are fully healthy and not suspended, which is a floaty notion, then I'd say five best players on the team (respective to their position, relative to all NFL players):

1. Howard
2. Hicks
3. Freeman
---------------
4. Long
5. Whitehair

Honorable Mentions: Sitton, Meredith

Likely, but without confirmation: Trubisky, Goldman and Floyd

Goldman and Floyd are in similar boats in the sense, they really haven't dominated in enough snaps so far to be called one of the best in the NFL; but if they stay near 100% healthy, I have little doubt they would display being one of the best in the NFL.

I'm rather convinced Cohen will be very effective this year, a fantastic and genius change-of-pace RB to Howard, based on his tape, but I'd still think it a bit too rose-tinted for me to include him in the "Likely" category.

That is very interesting perspective. It is crazy Glennon will be making that much money for the talent he brings to the table but I understand the rationale.

Just that the highest paid guys on the team are either other teams cast offs, players that are often injured and rarely on the field (relatively speaking) or players that are probably some of the lesser talented individuals on the field.

That's actually a positive because when we cut them, we will have a ton of cap space for when we are in position to contend.

Amukamara has had a pretty middling career to date, right? I'm just making sure I'm not missing any details here. No way he is in the top 5.

yuck. It just shows you what type of bargain ends up making it to free agency.
