The Cubs and the Rangers have finally finalized the 'player to be named later' in the July 27 trade for Cole Hamels.

The Rangers will reportedly acquire outfielder Alexander Ovailes who has been playing in the Dominican Summer League and is only 17 years old. He was signed by the Cubs out of the Dominican Republic during last year's international signing period.

In 2018, he is hitting .316 with four doubles, eight steals, and eight RBIs in 21 games.

Looks like Theo found his speedy pinch runner.

The Chicago Cubs have acquired outfielder Terrance Gore from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations.

The speedy Gore will head to Triple-A Iowa for a possible promotion probably when rosters expand in September.

It's a minor league deal and it doesn't affect the current 40 man roster for the Cubs.

i mean i don't care that much because they never give up much but I don't understand the logic behind Gore. I guess you could argue it is injury insurance as well as the speed but the thing is they never carry these guys in the playoffs. So, it seems to be more about getting there than them being useful in the playoffs.

They carried Leonys Martin on the post season roster last year??? He takes the place of the pitcher being left off the roster when they drop to 11.

Did they? I don't remember it(not saying your wrong). I know they didn't carry Berry in 2016 who effectively was the same role.

Brewers on top
Cubs on bottom

Brewers with 1 big month in May at 11 over and were 15 over 4 up on cubs on June 1st..
Since their 3 under and fell 4 back

Cubs didnt really have a big month and basically just played over 500 ball each month to stay close and now halfway in August, their 5 over for the month and starting to build a lead on the faltering Brewers ..

This is basically what i was saying about the division and brewers weren't that good...
Brewers fell to mediocrity since June 1st and didn't take advantage of a great May or the cubs basically playing a few games over. 500

Brewers went from 4 up on Cubs to 4 back over that time...

Now we need to see of the Cubs can finish August strong and the rotation, specifically Lester Hendricks and Hamels can continue to roll like they have the last week and pull away from the pack...

Sounds like Morrow not going to be counted on much down the stress or postseason for more then 1 game or a back to back if his pitches are minimal ..
This was my concern with him in the offseason and why i hoped they brought in another closer type...

Not sure if theyll be able to reel in another late inning arm now via waiver trade..
Strop Chisek Edwards and Kintzler are going to have to step up their game in the postseason if and when needed to get 4-6 outs or close out a game...

With Darvish most likely out for the year now, unless they plan on riding it out with Montgomery over getting him back into the pen..
Do they go and try and grab another starter off the waivers??
Did Shields clear yet

Mike can come off on the 25th. With todays off day that lines up with his start. Chatwood IMO is the back up plan. AAA they have Mills and Underwood but I expect them post Sept for extra depth vs starting games.

Trade front. Not sure who cleared wavers honestly and if they target. Honestly they just need 4 guys in Oct so Montgomery is MR regardless at that point.

First, im 99.9% sure we will not see Chatwood start another game this year, except maybe the last weekend after they clinch...

My question is..

Monty coming off the DL from discomfort in shoulder, so im not sure if they want to risk continuing to start him over just having him come out of the pen here and there to get him ready for October..

Also, their still in a race for the division, best record/home field and to stay ahead of other teams for WC..
So
I dont think they want to risk every 5th game on a guy from Iowa the rest of the way..
That around 7-8 starts rest of way , every game important now

Why i think they may be looking for a waiver deal, they got to get to October first

OK, totally off topic in every thread but this general one:

Does anyone else think that Steve Cishek's nickname on his player's weekend uniform ought to be "Sea Shells by the Sea Shore"?

Francisco Liriano, Jose Iglesias & Jordan Zimmermann, Tigers (link): It was a 100 percent certainty that Zimmermann, still owed $55.9MM through 2020 (including the remainder of this year’s salary) would clear waivers. Even with improved results this season (4.36 ERA, 7.9 K/9, 1.6 BB/9 in 88 2/3 innings), there’s virtually no hope of the Tigers shedding that salary this month. It was less certain that rentals like Liriano or Iglesias would clear, however. Liriano’s ERA ballooned to 4.72 last night after he was roughed up by the Twins, but he’s held left-handed pitching to a terrible .141/.247/.239 slash through 81 plate appearances. With $984K still owed to him through the end of the year, he’d be a reasonably affordable lefty specialist for a contending team’s bullpen. As for Iglesias, it seems quite likely that he’ll be moved to a contender. He’s hitting a respectable, albeit unspectacular .264/.306/.389 while playing terrific defense at shortstop. He’s owed $1.54MM of his $6.275MM salary through season’s end.

Honestly I would extend Chavez myself. He is kinda depth ATM So Chavez building up to 5 then Chatwood piggybacking until the 5-6th inning. That is if Montgomery flames out for Aug. Sept they add Underwood and Mills and can just do a AAA day. Run Mills first and piggyback Underwood until the pen can take over. Even a 3 Mills/3 Underwood/3 Chatwood gives a pen day off. Keeps the damage limited to 1/5.

I just really don't see them blowing up the 40 again for a temp situation.

Possibly but then their kinda hurting the pen a bit, especially with Morrow out probably a few more weeks..
