According to Haugh via 670.

Bears agreed to not take guarantees based on helmet to helmet hits ala Trumaine Edwards.

Roquan’s agents are pushing to remove guarantee language around suspensions related to activities outside of football.

EDIT: I see this was posted in the big Roquan thread, so feel free to delete. For those not keeping up there, here is your FYI

Yeah it is a surprise. All other sports have guarantees, which can’t be touched, so I guess there is that. If this is the holdout, it is stupid, unless they found something that could trigger a suspension.

Bears look good all of a sudden.

IF this is true then the Agent/Smith are being d-bags at this point. BUT, this sounds like a Bears leak to Haugh trying to get their side of the story out about it since they have been getting crushed in the media about it.

This suddenly just became more than "business" There is going to be some butt hurt over this. I can imagine the beating Smith and CAA are taking on twitter right now.

Yup

No different than CAA leaking last week about the Bears being greedy with guaranteed money. I was saying last week to wait for the Bears side. Now we have it. I still wouldn't immediately turn on Roquan.

Yeah I would like to see Edmunds vs Smith's contract. Same agent. If they got the Bills to agree and then Smith who was drafted higher shouldn't accept a deal that is worse.

Appears Haugh's boy George McCaskey leaked back. Smart move.

This will all be water under the bridge soon. Assuming Smith at least sees time in 3 preseason games it'll all be forgotten once the season starts. So many other positives to focus on with this team.

Smart move is whatever it takes to get Roquan signed. This is about winning public support and digging in heels. Questionable if that's smart or not.

The same specific agent also represents Josh Allen, picked ahead of Roquan Smith. I don’t think they have any outside discipline exemptions in that contract.

CAA also represents Darnold (#3), Ward (#4), Nelson (#6), and Davenport (#14).

If Roquan sees the public support is in favor of the team, he is more likely to direct his representation to forego this non football language and get the deal done.

Maybe. Depends on his personality. Some people when backed into a corner give up. Some dig in harder.

Roquan is a class act with no off field concerns. If I am him, I am wondering if my representation is using this as an opportunity to sell themselves to future college players.

From Haugh's article-

But only four teams in the league have written contracts going as far with protections as Smith seeks, a source said. The other 28 have avoided setting such contractual precedent, perhaps out of a fear of unintended consequences. It’s not a common demand, according to one longtime agent who has negotiated NFL deals.

I think the Suspension / Ejection part is OK personally. It is very similar to the "Charging" penalty on Checking an opponent in hockey.

They actually have TIME ... albeit not much .... to intentionally try to hurt someone or change their posture.....As far as the penalty of 15 yds and all, that one is a ClusterFuck

Ejection standards:

Player lowers his helmet to establish a linear body posture prior to initiating and making contact with the helmet
Unobstructed path to his opponent
Contact clearly avoidable and player delivering the blow had other options

............ My personal Opinion about this is

I would NEVER give in to Roquan .... Going out of his way to linearly try to Fuck somebody up, get ejected and then suspended I mean what the Fuck I think everyone Here doesnt want our players to intentionally Johnny Knox someone...even if their name is Aaron Rodgers / Jay Cutler

If this is a cause he believes in and he bows to peer pressure, that would not be the sign of a class act.

I surely don't know his thoughts on this. It wasn't my intention to say the Bears were "wrong". Merely that it was "questionable" whether it was a good move towards signing him because principled people can get defensive when their beliefs are questioned and from what little I know about Roquan, my belief is that he is that.

Peer pressure and fighting for an issue you feel is right to help the players in the future are not the same thing, Quite the opposite
