Former Bears GM Urges Team to Consider a Major Bold Move
By Erik Lambert - Aug 14, 20188743
People slam the guy a lot these days, which isn’t really fair. Love or hate him, former Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo deserves respect. He oversaw the second-most successful run of the Super Bowl era in this town which included four division titles and a Super Bowl berth in 2006. Nobody since him has done better, including Ryan Pace. So maybe it’s okay to hear what the guy has to say.

He took time to jump in on 670 The Score with “Mully & Haugh” to talk about the current state of the Bears. Everything from the recent signing of Roquan Smith to their prospect for 2018 were discussed. It was then that Mike Mulligan took the conversation in an interesting direction. One he knew Angelo has some experience in.

Among the hottest NFL stories of this offseason is the ongoing holdout of star Oakland Raiders pass rusher Khalil Mack. Communication over a new contract between him and head coach Jon Gruden has been minimal based on the latest information. This has led many to speculate that the team might consider trading the 27-year old rather than drag out talks as they’ve gone.

This has opened the door to major rumors involving whether the Bears, who badly need pass rush help, might make the bold move to go after him. So what does Angelo think about that?

Jerry Angelo says he’d go hard after Mack if he still ran the Bears
One thing that Angelo always believed about having success in the NFL is a willingness to be bold. Don’t be afraid of making the big blockbuster move if you feel it can put your team in position to go after a championship. That was his thinking back in 2009 when he took his swing for the fences on Jay Cutler. So when confronted with the Mack idea, he jumped on board right away.

“IN KHALIL MACK? ABSOLUTELY. JUST LIKE A JULIUS PEPPERS. YOU HAVE TO BE INTERESTED…MY PHILOSOPHY IS ANYTIME YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET A SPECIAL PLAYER, YOU GO FOR IT. YOU KNOW WE MADE THE TRADE FOR JAY CUTLER. I WOULD DO THAT ALL OVER AGAIN…HIS ARROW WAS GOING UP, HE HAD A LOT OF SPECIAL TRAITS AT ARGUABLY THE MOST VALUED POSITION.

WHEN YOU GET A DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF MACK’S ABILITY, IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. I CAN’T ANSWER THAT QUESTION, MIKE, I DON’T FOLLOW THE BEARS DAY TO DAY. I’M SURE THERE ARE THINGS THAT I’M NOT SEEING OR YOU’RE NOT SEEING…BUT YOU KNOW MY PHILOSOPHY IS IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET A SPECIAL PLAYER, PARTICULARLY ON DEFENSE, YOU KNOW YOU GO AFTER HIM.

THE BLUEPRINT IN THE LEAGUE IS IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN ELITE QUARTERBACK, AND HOPEFULLY TRUBISKY WILL WORK HIMSELF INTO THAT STATUS, YOU’VE GOT TO GO WITH DEFENSE.”

This has been the truth for the Bears for ages. Until they’re certain of what they have in Trubisky, they have to continue feeding the defense at every opportunity. It’s already a top 10 unit in the NFL as last year proved. The one thing they’re missing is an elite pass rusher. With all due respect to Leonard Floyd, he just hasn’t shown those qualities.

Mack has. He’s in his prime and a virtual guarantee for at least 10 sacks a year. The combination of him and Floyd in the same front seven along with Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman and now Roquan Smith too? It’s hard to stop one’s mouth from watering at the possibilities.

I’m probably the only person who simultaneously respects Angelo while thinking this is a bad idea.

We will be giving up two firsts and a record breaking contract to get him IF he is even on the trade block. Leave it to JA to recommend building a typical lovie team that’s obsolete in today’s nfl

Good defense is never obsolete. Mack is a 3 time probowler and is one of the best pass rushers in this league at the age of 27

Ok for our current team would his 100 mil deal be worth it? What would be the max you are willing to trade?

I have to admit I'd love to see Mack in Navy blue.

I personally think the asking price from the raiders might be too high. Is there any chance they let him go for a 2nd? I hate giving up first rounders, at the same time pace may do well to get some guaranteed quality for one of his first round picks. So far he has done better in the later rounds.

I'd be willing to pay him Von Miller money adjusted for inflation.

That would totally depend on the offense. If the offense and Trubisky look like they can't figure it out then it wouldn't be worth it. That's a tough call to make now (as fans) but Nagy and Pace would have a better idea of what this offense can be.

If the offense puts up good numbers then it'd be worth it, IMO. This defense is primed to be very, very good. A pass rusher is all it's missing. I'd give up a first for Mack. Give me the guaranteed all-pro. His massive contract would be palatable too with Trubisky still being on his rookie deal. It would actually be the perfect time to make the move for a guy like Mack.

Bears do not have a 2nd round pick next season.

How common is it for teams to trade multiple first rounders for a non-QB? 2 1st's seems excessive.

Kalil is a game changer. Pair him with Smith, Floyd, Hicks. That's a fearsome defense.

TRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mack is worth two firsts, and Mack is worth 22 million a year. But sure as hell not both.

Not saying I'd do it. But how many times has this franchise seen first round picks bust? We're talking about a game changing proven player. I'd at least think it over.

Honestly, a single first for Mack is a no-brainer for me. Two 1's is a little much, but I'd still consider it. A 1st in 2019 and 2nd in 2020 I'd probably do that too.

Plus, we aren't paying Trubisky $30M a year. If the team looks primed for a run, again, based on the offense's progress, I'd pull the trigger on Mack.

Heh, the problem with that is that the guy recommending this is the same guy that drafted exactly one guy who could play in the 1st round in like 10 years. If Angelo thinks it's a good move, then there's a high probability that something is wrong with Mack.

Funny, but I'm the opposite. I thought Jerry was incompetent, but I'd at least consider a trade for Mack---although it's never going to happen. I do wonder why the Packers are considered the most likely trade partner, when the bears have more cap space.

They have more draft capital to trade for him.

Absolutely not.

Some ppl really need to learn a basic understanding of the salary cap...

The three most important positions in football.

QB
OT
Pass Rusher

We have no OLB's besides Floyd. Mack would set this defense off. If I'm Pace, I'm at least making a call just to see. Fuck the salary cap.
