Here's the Seattle deal....from my understanding, the Mariners are crap, the Seahawks are too, the basketball team moved from scenic Seattle to that mecca of basketball, Oklahoma City. With nothing to live for and no playoffs ever in sight, the Seattle market was hungry from something new and shiny. The Seattle Sounders FO is also shared with/a part of The Seahawks FO......they littered the streets with free merch in their first season and they also have a built-in email list of almost 400,000 + people through the Seahawks. When folks were told how (relatively) inexpensive the season tickets were, people in the area jumped at the chance. Now, don't get me wrong, Seattle has has a team there since 74', but no one gave a shit about them b/c they really didn't do much (NASL days aside). So when this marketing frenzy and perfect sports storm happened, they have almost averaged 35,000/game this season. Not too shabby for most anywhere--higher than some of the most attended teams in the oft too-revered European leagues.

Now as for how many are knowledgeable fans.....that's funny. They range, just like anywhere else, from the I've been here since NASL to the "hey, we just got a team in the big leagues" sorts. I don't fault them for that....that's what good and positive marketing does. Fills your stadium. I hope Hauptman and company take note and mimic some of the moves to get the asses in the seats--it may create a better argument for moving the team into the city proper and attract other investors.

I don't hate on their numbers, but it is funny how in that 35,000+ people how many really don't have a clue--but I guess I'd take a fair number in the stadium that didn't have a clue and were at least there 'getting a clue' than a lot of empty seats in a 22,000 seater.......

That being said, # of fans don't make the team (although they are influencers in several ways), but the Fire really need to be on top in order win on the 4th. It is my hope that they will be. That way the 40,000 + that are expected can witness history for a team that hasn't been around as long, but already has more history than they will.
