Chicago — The White Sox defeated the Cubs for the 4th time in 5 tries and extended their winning streak to 11 games to claim the first annual Crosstown Cup. It was Paul Konerko’s 19th home run of the season off Cubs rookie Andrew Cashner that gave the White Sox the lead in the 8th. For Cashner it was the first loss of his career.
Freddy Garcia shut down the stumbling Cubs offense going 7 innings allowing just 2 runs. Carlos Silva was just as impressive going 6 innings allowing two runs. Neither pitcher factored into the decision. Aramis Ramirez hit his 6th homer of the season off Garcia. His first since coming off the DL.
Lou Piniella announced before today’s game that if and when Carlos Zambrano returns from his suspension he will pitch out of the bullpen. Tom Gorzelanny will take his place in the rotation. The Cubs have asked Major League Baseball for guidelines regarding the suspension.
