News that hit right before Christmas (December 23rd), but was passed by and announce a couple weeks later and that was the signing of 2B Edgar Gonzalez to a minor league deal. He will likely compete for a bench spot and to back up Darwin Barney. Also, he could make the team more eaisly if utility men Blake DeWitt or Jeff Baker are traded. However, the Cubs claimed IF Jeff Bianchi from the Kansas City Royals and seems like he has a more likeable chance to make the team. As of right now, it would seem that Gonzalez was just depth for the Iowa Cubs.
Gonzalez is a 33 year-old who is a right-handed hitter. Gonzalez came into the majors in 2000 for the then call Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In his career in the MLB, Gonzalez has hit .255 with 11 home runs and 51 runs driven in. So… as you can see he has been a non-factor in the majors. Gonalez has bounced around in the majors … Devils Rays (2000-2003), Rangers (2004), Nationals (2005), Marlins (2006), Cardinals (2007), Padres (2008), Giants (2010) and now the Cubs. As you see I skipped a year… in 2009 Gonzalez played in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants.
So… don’t look for anything out of him and watch him in Triple A if you want too.
