Nemanja Nikolic’s first year in Major League Soccer has been a special won.
The Chicago Fire striker won the MLS Golden Boot award after finishing the season with 24 goals and helping lead the team back to the MLS Playoffs. Nikolic’s 24 goals were tops in the league, besting David Villa by two.
Per MLS press release:
One of the most prolific scorers in Europe before he came to the Fire, Nikolic was the leading scorer in the Hungarian league in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons and the top striker in the Polish first-division in the 2015-16 campaign. He was leading the Polish league in goals when he left Warsaw for Chicago midway through the 2016-17 European season.
Nikolic joined the Fire back in December of 2016 as a Designated Player deal from Polish Club Legia Warsaw. For the 2015-16 campaign, Nikolic was the top striker in the Polish first-division, showing off his skills against tough competition.
He becomes the first Chicago Fire player to win the award in its existence which began in 1996.
The Fire will host the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday in the knockout round of the 2017 MLS Playoffs.
