Camping with the Bears Day-7

Day 7 of Bears camp is in the books on a hot humid stagnant day. The air might have been slow and heavy but practice was spirited with the defense winning the day overall.

Lance Briggs was a one man wrecking crew on defense today. Lance deflected 4 balls in pass coverage during 11 on 11 drills. His last tip resulted in a Danny McCray interception sending Jay and company quickly back to the sidelines in the two minute drills. Briggs seemed to be everywhere on the field setting the tempo for a defense that has struggled at times in camp. Lance wasn’t the only  linebacker today with great pass defense as rookie LB Christian Jones had his best day in camp with a deflected pass meant for Donate Rosario. Jones was again very active and is showing off his size and athleticism to the Bears coaching staff. The defense seemed to be intercepting the play calls as Tucker’s defense was extremely active overall.

The offense looked a bit lost at times as offensive lineman jumped on back to back plays during 11 on 11 drills. Trestman had the noise and music going during these drills to add some realism to the practice. Martellus Bennett got the crowd revved up to counteract the noise and to cheer on the offense.. Cutler again looked sharp most of the day with his lone mistake being the tipped interception by McCray. He generally found the open receivers impressing the media and a crowd with his velocity and accuracy.

There still is a lot of evaluation and competition at the back up running back position but veteran Shaun Droughn seems to hold the inside track. As camp has progressed he is seeing more and more repetitions with the first and second teams. His grasp of the playbook is being noticed and he looks comfortable and fluid in the offensive scheme. Talking with him after practice he admitted this is the toughest camp he has attended as Trestman demands a lot out of his players. He did admit that Trestman’s camp pace is the same as his OTA schedule so there is little adjustments needed.

The defensive line was again putting pressure on the QB and rookie Will Sutton had one particular impressive play. Sutton bull rushed and completely overpowered Micheal Ola blowing up a passing play by the second team. This is not last the same defense as last year and if teams think they will run over this Bears team they will be greatly disappointed. Adrian Wilson ran with the first team defense all day and this author would not be surprised if healthy, he is not the day one starter. I would expect 6 new starters in this year’s defense with a few surprises in store for the Bear faithful.

Camp moves to Soldier field tomorrow night for Fan Fest. Sunday will be an off day for the players and then back to the fields on Monday in Bourbonnais for Military appreciation day. Can’t wait for this season to start. GO BEARS!
