Chicago Cubs Can’t Overcome Bad 1st Inning: Cubs 4. Brewers 5

The Chicago Cubs left the windy city, the coldness and the midwest hurricane to travel to Milwaukee and take on the Milwaukee Brewers for a 3-game series. Jeff Samardzija started the game for the Cubs and got off to a shaky start, but settled in nicely after that. However, the Cubs could not overcome the bad 1st inning. The Cubs did have highlights during the game, including Dale Sveum’s 1st ejection of the year but also downs as well. The Cubs fell 5-4 against the Brewers to improve their record to 5-10.

Even though the Cubs lost today, there were good points of the game:

Alfonso Soriano is starting to heat up nicely. Soriano went 3-4 today with 2 singles and a double. Soriano batting average is around .300. Soriano keeps raising his trade stock as a potential mid-summer trade candidate.

Dale Sveum backed up Samardzija and Welington Castillo today and in the making, the home plate umpire tossed him. Sveum barely said anything and was tossed immediately. Sveum does not show a lot of fire and was nice to see for once.

When Anthony Rizzo hits homers, he hits them. Rizzo does not get cheap homers. Rizzo’s last 2 homers were crushed and needed a long tape measure to count them.

With the good, there are always the bad:

Kevin Gregg made his Cubs debut again for the first time in years. Gregg has not pitched in 15 days and you could tell. Gregg gave up an infield-single to Segura, a stolen base, a walk to Braun and was taken out. Gregg did not record an out.

The Cubs cannot hit with runners in scoring position. It doesn’t matter who’s up  and how many outs there are, the Cubs will not score. I think it’s more mental and the guys wanting to be the hero and not playing as a team when there are runners in scoring position. I am not going to say the Cubs will fix the issue. As the Cubs have had this problem for years and nothing has worked.

Tomorrow the Cubs will be back at action at 6:05 p.m. central on Comcast Sportsnet and heard on WGN 720. Edwin Jackson will try to get his 1st win in a Cubs uniform and Hiran Burgos will make his major-league debut for the Brewers.
