Cubs fans went to sleep happy last night knowing that the Cubs have pulled off the series sweep of the White Sox since 1998, and their second such sweep all-time. Although the all-time record is in favor of the White Sox 49-45, things aren’t looking to bright for the South Siders in the coming years as Paul Konerko is trending downwards and all pieces of value, with the exception of Chris Sale may be on the move.
Another positive of this game for Cubs fans and the front office has to be the solid start that Matt Garza turned out. With the Texas Rangers and other teams all looking at Garza he pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run and struck out six. Rumors swirled throughout the day about Garza possibly signing an extension, but all indications point to a trade for now.
On the other hand, the White Sox continue to generally struggle as their hitting only produced two runs, one earned. Pitching wise, the Boston Red Sox had been rumored to be interested in pursuing left handed reliever Matt Thornton. However that interest may wane since Thornton gave up three runs, two hits, and walk, while only collecting one out in his performance last night. The one bright spot for the White Sox has been hot catching prospect Josh Phegley who, since being called up, has hit .300 with two home runs and four RBI’s in three games. Hopefully, for the South Side faithful’s sake, he continues to do well so there is something still worth watching on the South Side.
