The Cubs avoided arbitration with Carlos Marmol today, agreeing to a 3 year, $20 million deal.
In five seasons with the Cubs, Marmol has posted a 3.25 ERA with 500 strikeouts in 358 1/3 innings pitched, an 11.68 K/9. In his first full season as the Cubs closer he had 38 saves, struck out a major league record 16 batters per nine innings, and a 2.55 ERA. However his struggles with his control showed with a 6.03 BB/9 but he only allowed 4.6 hits per nine innings.
Marmol will earn $3.2 million in 2011, $7 million in 2012, and $9.8 million in 2013. The deal covers Marmol’s last two years of arbitration and his first year of free agency. Marmol was the Cubs last arbitration-eligible player, having signed lefty reliever Sean Marshall to a 2 year, $4.7 million deal.
