It is still the same.

There is a huge difference between asking for interviews from a college and from an NFL team.

I believe that there is a paper trail that a reporter can find to show which NFL employees have interview requests.

In college, a team may ask an AD of a college to interview their employees for NFL positions and the AD may deny the request.

The key is that there is no paper trail for the media to know who is being interviewed because:
  1. Most NFL teams tend to be secretive and try to hide as much as they can. An college interview can be hidden because of the lack of paperwork.
  2. A coaching candidate is usually asked to keep an interview a secret by the NFL team. It is up to them to hide or reveal that information. Nowadays, it is best to hide an interview because they might lose a ton of recruits if it comes out but they decide to stay.
  3. An AD can hide or reveal an interview but, like a HC, it would be bad to acknowledge an interview because of potential loss of recruits.

I see your point on the the paper trail and AD's not wanting the info to go public to avoid negative impact on recruits... That said, in essence then, the NFL rule only exists as a courtesy call requirement to the AD with no paper trail requirement.

Any actual contact or formal interview could be kept private and would not have to be formally reported other than when the hire was confirmed. To be sure the rule was followed, the NFL would then verify that the AD had been contacted prior to any interviews and/or an AD could file a complaint to the NFL if they were not properly contacted.

Harbaugh is the kind of guy that NFL players will tune out after awhile. He’s never going to be his brother, or Mike Tomlin, never going to be the guy who settles in for the long haul. He’ll be on to the next stop, regardless of what happens in three or four years. I’m also concerned by the ex player or whoever that was calling JH out for not knowing offense. I tried to find it, but there is so much “Jim Harbaugh controversy” junk that pops up I gave up. Can someone shed a little light on that, please? And if you give Harbaugh credit for Kap’s rise, why did his skills decline so rapidly? In his last season at soldier field vs the Bears he looked horrible. Maybe the social justice stuff was taking up too much of his head. Who knows, but Harbaugh is a nut, HC’s need to be stable. All too often JH seems like someone who has gone off his meds.

Daboll has been enough places and runs HIS OWN offense. Supposedly tailors it around his players. What a concept ? Matt Nagy. Allen is the guy Chicago has NEVER had, and Daboll was around from the beginning of that. It would be amazing if someone who’s actually developed an all pro QB, who runs his own offense and called his own plays for years…could HC the Bears. Fields needs to be coached up, he’s got all the tools. I don’t care how good the defense is or how good the running game is, this is a passing league, and you are NEVER going to win the SB anymore without a franchise QB and a modern NFL passing attack.

Daboll is NFL smart, and yes there’s recency bias, but that offense last night, smoking the Patriots, was football porn.Buffalo is an elite team, and part of that is LF’s defense obviously, but I do not want a failed ex head coach. NFW.

Honestly...

Harbaugh is more of a "safer" choice. He's had proven success at Stanford, 49ers, Michigan. Getting over the hump? Sometimes it takes time. Look how long it took John Elway or Andy Reid. And he knows Chicago, so he knows he's got to get the job right with Justin Fields. So with that being said, I'm not the least bit worried with Jim Harbaugh. For all we know, he could keep Sean Desai (good for the defense) or bring back Vic Fangio (not a bad thing either!).

As for Daboll...

I wouldn't mind. The Bears need to vet this guy big-time as he's yet another hot, unproven name. What is his staff going to look like? The thing I like about Daboll is he has his own offense (correct me if I'm wrong), and he structured his offense to fit his players, not the other way around. Can he lead a team like Harbaugh? Can he build up players? Can he turn boys into men? A lot of unknowns, but he can certainly run an offense and that is a plus.

Daboll runs his own offense at Buffalo…..what will he do as a head coach? Will he do as McDormott does and let his coaches run their teams or will he be the Offensive coordinator as well.

Leomas,

Well the bears have never hired a HC who has run his own offense, unless you count Dr. Doom. And only George would have hired that (fellow) weirdo. Nagy was an imposter.

Dabo would be the play caller. Lots of HC’s do…Look at the top of our own division. Maybe have an OC eventually that calls his own. Daboll installs his OWN system, with his terminology, etc.

Bills offense completely stacked, but Daboll certainly making the most out of it.

Nagy and Trestman ran their own offenses no matter what you think though. Bill Belichick should be the standard bearer when looking at coaches who don’t call plays. I would prefer the next head coach to be just that and not try to put too much upon his own plate especially trying to turn this team and it’s culture around. It takes a toll on a man when he has to do everything plus run a offense.

And he doesn’t have to worry about time outs, red flags, clock management etc etc etc. it makes it easier if you can concentrate on your specific job……in my opinion

Harbaugh with Roman and Fangio would be the absolute best case scenario. I don't think it's likely you get all three though but that is my dream scenario. Joe Schoen + Daboll would be my 2nd choice but I'd be very, very happy with either of them. Get the right GM who is on the same page as the HC and go find players that fit the system they're running.

Maybe it wasn’t clear…but I meant before they were made head coach of the Bears. Trestman had actual success, and should have been weeded out as a weirdo. Nagy ran Andy Reid’s offense, and called plays for half a season and fucked up totally in the playoff game with the Chiefs. Daboll has run HIS offense and called his plays for years.

No one doubts that it can be tough going from play calling OC to play calling HC. But Daboll is running a modern, competent NFL passing game and has developed a modern, competent NFL franchise QB. The Bears have never had either one. Justin Fields is sitting there, he’s not going to develop himself.

I don’t think you are not giving David Culley and Ken Dorsey any credit for developing Josh Allen.
The Buffalo offense no doubt has benefited from a great defense that cannot be understated. I’m wondering why Daboll has not been hired as a head coach even though he has been in consideration for the last few years?
