Then why is the mayor setting a curfew for youth and why are people I know comparing it to Detroit?

Note the difference between gang/youth violence and random violence.
You hang out with people that are in to that shit, you will likely experience it first hand at some point.

Not much different than hanging out with an ill tempered drunk in the burbs- spend enough time with someone like that in bars and you will eventually find yourself in a scuffle.

If you aren't involved in that shit, there is nothing to worry about for the most part, nothing more than anywhere else.

It’s also a lot of fear mongering from the media imo. I’ve had ppl tell me Chicago is a war zone and I’m like really how often do you go? The answer is usually “I’ve never been” or “I went to six flags once” aka gurnee lmao. It’s almost always the ppl who spend zero time in Chicago talking about the crime. They see one video on twitter and base their entire opinion about the city in that video.

I haven’t been there since last march so maybe it’s gotten worse but as you say, if you’re not seeking that type of drama and have some situational awareness you’ll be fine. Got rooftop tix to a cubs game in July, first time on the rooftops!

In my neck of the woods there's a good percentage of people that think Chicago is populated exclusively by black gangbangers on welfare sucking off their downstate tax dollars.
My cousin went to a concert in Milwaukee because he was afraid to go to Chicago.
He's done time though. I think being in a prison system with a high percentage of minorities from the Chicago area skewed his perspective.

The fear mongering is a huge part, plus we are talking about 25% of the states population in one small geographic spot... of course there will be more frequent crimes.

More drug activity, higher concentration of poor and unemployed desperate people, higher density of bars and late night activity...

If doing nationwide studies of shootings were allowed, I would bet the cross section of shootings in poor areas would be roughly the same between trailer parks in Mississippi and the poorest parts of the big cities.

Nearly every big city is getting worse. People have lost faith in humanity, the environment, government and God. It will only get worse. Everywhere.

Everywhere is bad right now, but Chicago continues to be worse.
yeah, sure. I just am that much less inclined to go into the office because the cta is so fucking nuts right now. with my commute, I can end up on the pink/orange/green/blue or red line, and I can't think of one of them where someone hasn't been murked or seriously fucked up this year alone

I still use the buses, but I had been avoiding CTA trains since all things COVID took hold two years ago because the red line is fucking gross.

Now it's for a different fear for my health.

I got nothing worth stealing, but with random people stabbing/shooting/beating random people on the regular...I will just take the far less violent and gross bus.

Fortunately, I have a Metra station by my place that drops me off as close to my workplace as CTA would anyhow. It's more expensive, but far more peaceful.

And we are just about to dive head first into as another crazy summer!!!

Between that and the ridiculous price of...well...everything, I am becoming quite the shut in these days.

Pre COVID, I took the Blue Line to work everyday. Just tried to ignore it functioning as a homeless hotel and finding bullet holes. I couldn't imagine taking it again, especially if I had to late. Fortunately, I took the WFH opportunity to get out of Illinois before my employer changes their mind. Unfortunately, it is bad everywhere and sometimes it doesn't feel like moved far enough.

I think what you’re trying to say is #fearporn. Careful @Mighty Joe Young had that trademarked like #backtits and #moobs.

I’m taking my gf for her first visit over the summer. I’ve never felt threatened in Chicago, and when I worked in Illinois I’d have to go to Harvey quite often. That’s probably the only times I felt on edge.

My brother was saying downtown is violent now but he’s also a maga Special person. So staying off wacker and like state should be fine? The typical attractions are fine too I’m sure? Red line is ok?

The downtown stuff is a little overblown from about a hundred high school kids coordinating a recent big Saturday meet up at Millennium Park, combined with some coordinated "smash & grabs" at high end retail in the River North last summer.

It's not any more dangerous than it's ever been. Especially in broad daylight doing the typical touristy things.

The trains have been extra stupid, but simply being aware of your surroundings rather than nose down in an iPhone goes a long way.

I feel like a large number of older Millennials are just figuring out that they are in fact adults with kids, and the world suddenly seems much more dangerous.

They go from "You only live once, bro!"

To "Omg the world is so, dangerous now, like there are criminals who do crime! And sometimes.... THEY ARE VIOLENT!"

Like yeah, the world doesn't suddenly become soft and cuddly just because your heart melted for your baby.

It should motivate you to become smarter, stronger, more vigilant.... basically anything you can be better to parent your child.

But this generation isn't parenting, they're on Twitter registering their opinion on the hyperbole being shoved down their gullet.

Probably because they were mostly raised by my generation, who were mostly a bunch of slackers raised by a bunch of hippies.

That's like three generations of completely structureless parenting in a world full of distractions.

Broad strokes and all. I know @HeHateMe is batting a thousand in the parenting department, so some of us overcame the dysfunction.

Or there are people like me that knew I would suck as a dad, so I never had kids.
