Roquan is under contract so of he is physically able to perform but refuses to then he is violating his contract and should be fined. No hard feelings, just business.
This is what happens when you publically try and subvert a GM's authority. Roquan Smith was fine until he made that plea to George McCaskey to step in over Ryan Poles head and give him the money he wanted. It was really misguided, George is not going to do that to a first year GM and if he did it would be a pretty major controversy that would really soil the Bears reputation league wide.
So now Poles can do whatever he wants in this situation, including presenting Roquan with the ultimatum between playing this year for his fifth year option or sitting out the year and watching his value halve itself. By demanding the McCaskey's step in Roquan inadvertently made it impossible for them to do so.
Here is how it doesn't go:
Agent: "I got you a great deal with the Bears, they offered five million more guaranteed than the next team. You should be ecstatic"
Player: "Hold on, how does Roquan Smith feel about this?"
Because players and agents will take note of this.
Then he is an idiot because players and agents will care about this.
You do know agents are going to very keen to make sure all their clients know full well that Roquan Smith doesn't have an agent and that this is much more a cautionary tale of representing oneself than it is the evil Bears. This saga has a lot of parties with interests at stake. This logic makes no sense. More likely it is the case Bears will have to overpay for FAs or if they and another team offer similar terms, players and agents will vhose the team that does right by its players.
Right so all the prospective free agents told you they wouldn't sign with the Bears themselves?Right so George told you this himself?
Not true
Skipping training camp comes at a hefty cost with players facing fines of $40,000 a day for players on a rookie contract and $50,000 a day for players on a veteran contract.

Why would they? Roquan doesn't have an agent. If anything they are happy the Bears are at the center of making the biggest case for having an agent in recent NFL history. They are going to be grateful. They should take some of their commission and give it back to the Bears as a thank you.Ok that is not mutually exclusive from steering their clients away from a team that plays hardball with players.

You are working with outdated info partner. Schefter just came in and said the Bears offer was more than fair.Because the perception per Rappaport is that the Bears are asking for things that are not standard.

It’s such a stupid take and 100% false that free agents pass on teams because of past tough negotiations. It’s ridiculous, has no merit, and no track record.
This isn’t the NBA with fat Jerry pissing off a generation.

NFLPA threatens to deter players from signing with Bears if Illinois passes bill
DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFLPA, says the bill unfairly targets professional athleteswww.google.com
Oh so now we're just going to ignore the news we don't like. You mean the same dude proven to be in the tank for teams?
Maybe since he doesn’t want to pay an actual agent, he will let a former player help him out for free? Possible…Don't think so. Why would Roquan want the guy who represents the people he's negotiating with to represent him as well in those negotiations?
