And Hill was a 5th round pick.
Not saying it disproves your point, but let’s remember that Hill was a first round prospect who fell to the 5th because he got kicked off the team for choking a pregnant woman until she passed out and almost died.

As an aside, I wonder how many people who were saying hell no to George Pickens would love to have Tyreek Hill on the team.

At the time Hill was drafted not a whole lot of people. Now people with perfect hindsight might have a different opinion. Pickens has less red flags than Hill did, but it still cost him draft position.

At this time in 2020 who here thought Mooney would hit the ground running? Jones appears to be a better prospect than Mooney.
Me.

I was checking this thread because i remember a lot of posters saying Fields wasn't especially into Velus after watching tape with the coaches. Then we find out Fields was texting him before the pick, seems he was pretty good with it.

WR- Tennessee
FWIW:

Overview
Special-teams specialist with good size. Despite spending six seasons in college between his time at USC and Tennessee, Jones has very modest production as a wideout, but flashed potential in that area in 2021. He's fearless with the ball in his hands after the catch and as a kick returner. He's not a very fundamentally sound route-runner but might not need to be if teams view him as a catch-and-run specialist in the quick game underneath. Jones has a chance to ride his special teams versatility into a specialist spot on a roster.

Yeah Hill was not a consensus 1st round talent as he never never topped 1k yards rushing or receiving and was considered undersized for both RB and WR. He was projected more as a returner and 3rd WR/slot type and few envisioned him playing outside. There was talk of him going undrafted due to the off the field issues. More likely he was a mid round pick on talent alone.

The Bears receivers suck, right? Well, maybe there's some room for cautious optimism.

  • Velus Jones averaged over 27 yards a kick return his senior year in college. One of the metrics I have always personally believed translated to on-field explosiveness and speed was a high kickoff return average. Anything above around 24.5 is worth paying attention to, and the higher the better. And he didn't show up as the typical rookie receiver. Dude showed up ready to go to work. He knows he's older and may not get a chance at a third contract, so his second contract is going to be everything.
  • Darnell Mooney is every bit as fast, agile, light on his feet, and quick in and out of cuts as Calvin Ridley (hopefully that's the only thing he has in common with Calvin Ridley). He's also been working with QB1 alot in the off-season. They are going to be very familiar with each other.
  • Let's be honest, EQ hasn't done squat in the NFL. I have one reason to not write him off though. Luke Getsy knows who he is and what he can do more than anyone as he spent the last few years with him watching every play in practice.
  • Byron Pringle- this dude can navigate a parking lot faster than anyone I've ever seen!! ? Okay, so that was humour. On a serious note, watch his NFL highlights. He's got #1 receiver size, speed, and quickness. He'll be a reliable target that can get open and can take it the distance and doesn't get caught from behind.
  • Dazz Newsome- Let's not forget that this guy missed training camp last year. Watch his college highlights. I wouldn't call him fast, but he seems to make a lot of big plays (though sometimes he does get caught from behind).

A thread to keep an eye on as the season progresses. A lot of people making declarative statements on Velus Jones one way or the other, and insulting each other about it.

That fumbled punt was horrible, but the coaches (and himself) should've had him play like a centerfielder when Barry Bonds came up to bat. Giants punter has a cannon leg, trying to catch that shit running backwards would be hard af. VJJ needs some offensive snaps asap. At least throw him the screens instead of Kmet.

I still stand by my comment on quality of person who was engaging in total dick ripping over this.

Eberflus and Co. seem pretty risk-averse, so I'm not sure they want to put the ball in the hands of a guy whose first touch of the pre-season and first touch of the season were both muffed punts.

Everyone's out here expecting the Bears to throw Velus multiple bubble screens, crossing routes and quick slants, while forgetting that it took him six years of college ball to get more than 280 receiving yards in a season. I would suspect Velus' first year or two (maybe forever) will be simply getting used to being in a professional football environment. Watch his route-running in college. He's a project player.

Having him take defenders with him would help underneath, he can be a decoy. Go run forest, to the endzone. idgaf, do something.

Decoy that takes the top off. 1 Jet. 1 bubble. Maybe one touch in the backfield in a 1 or 2 back look. 4 simple plays that wouldnt of been asking much

Perfect strategy for a 25 year old 3rd round pick if you're a Bears GM

Im suprised they didnt at least put him out in trips as a decoy on a run, or let him block on a bubble screen, or have him run hitchs as part of a Smash concept to take advantage of DBs overplaying his short game - you know, be creative on how you use him in the offense. There's plenty you can do with him that doesnt involve him running a bubble screen when the defense suspects he will run a bubble screen.
