Lol at anyone thinking Pace will let his pride go and move on from Floyd (with the exception of a trade)

For those who don't want to click the links, 13.5 million does not equate to top 5 money for a linebacker, 3-4 outside linebacker, edge rusher, or 4-3 defensive end.

Just looking at the edge rushers:

In terms of $/year he would be just ahead of Preston Smith, making him the 18th most expensive edge rusher in the NFL.

He would be #6 for OLBs and 13th for DEs.

Sure he's not top 5 like mentioned, but he's hardly worth $13.22M in cap space for next season.

If the Bears run it back on defense they can generate about 39.8 million in cap space if Prince takes an extension and lowers his cap number.

I’d look to draft an OLB in the 2nd. The Floyd experiment is over. If you can’t produce with Mack on the other side, you are not getting 13 mil from me. I will wish you luck and look to draft a replacement who will most likely be more disruptive.

I think he gets one more year. I do not see Pace bailing on him to start a rookie.

They will talk about his playing the run and pass coverage. The coaches cannot see to stop singing his praises.

They sing his praises saying this is the year he takes a jump but it hasn’t happened. Now they have to pay him 13 mil for the unlikely chance that next year he turns into a pass rushing presence. It would be a dumb move. Bears need the cap to allocate to other positions on offense. Specifically OL and TE. It would be completely idiotic money allocation.

What we have seen is that when Hicks and Mack are on the field and being disruptive, Floyd’s lack of pass rush is mitigated by his flexibility in coverage and general athleticism.

When one of those guys is out, I think you need a better pure pass rusher to come in to that slot to fill the void. The defense has been solid in Hicks' absence but the lack of a pass rush threat from Floyd and, as importantly, from the Lynch/Irving wasteland behind him, has been glaring.

I'm torn really on Floyd. I think they pick the option up because it's a Pace first round pick. But I'd be just as happy using that money on a couple of productive vets that can rotate in and out of the line up and give us 6-8 sacks each over a season.

But we shouldn't expect to make a huge saving here unless we spend a 2nd rounder on the position. Then you could bring in a Golden/Mercilus type player and run the draft pick out in the rotation and cut Floyd. Maybe.

The only way you keep Floyd is if you sign him to an extension that puts his cap hit in the 7 million range. .

The disappointing thing also is that we need to let Aaron Lynch walk, so we will already be in the market for another OLB to get snaps. For me, Floyd's value is at 5-7 mil a year, and only that much because he is young. So far, he has had plenty opportunities playing alongside Goldman, Mack, and Hicks (last season) to produce, yet hasn't done much of anything.

We need to give his snaps to someone else who can take advantage of playing next to all-pros. I'm tired of teams doubling and tripling Mack, and not having anyone else that will make them pay for that.

Floyd isn't really that young. He'll be 28 at the start of next season. And letting go of Lynch is no bigger, he's been trash this year really.

Most likely releases:

Long: 8.1 mil in savings
Prince : 8 mil
Turbo: 4.5 mil
Shaheen 1.27 mil

On the bubble:

Patterson 5.25 mil (he's played well IMO but that's a big number)
O'donnell 1.7 mil
Braunecker 1.5 mil

You could save some cap space with an extension of AR. After that the only big move would be letting Floyd go. They seem to value him more than the fan base does so I'm guessing he stays next year.
I think you extend Patterson and give him a special teamer deal fir the next 5 years
