Do any of you turds manage your own 401k? Wife and I are looking to open up 403b's along with our Roth IRA's. I've been researching what Vanguard offers, but it appears that I won't necessarily be working with someone in my area. Not sure I'm a big fan of that, but Vanguard always gets good reviews.

Thoughts? Ideas? Bearce?

Vangaurd is a solid company. You don't need to work with a person - just pick a Target Fund Date (year you plan to retire) and let it do it's work. Target Funds are literally the easiest and most passive ways to invest.

Agreed. I have managed funds, unmanaged funds and also trade on my own. IMO Vanguard is set it and forget it.

I have Vanguard's managed services group handle my portfolio. You could do it yourself as there are many forums and books on creating your own Vanguard portfolio. But Vanguard as got the managed services fee down to 30 basis points for mid to large profile customers. My manager is located in Boston and I don't miss having someone local. In the past i have had Fisher Investments and 2 others handle my account over the last 20 years.

IMO, I don't want to handle making the choices myself anymore. 15 years ago I was semi-daytrading and making my own choices. Some days I would make $200k and others I would lose almost the same amount. Finally decided to let the pros do it. It was too hectic on my life.

You can have a 45 min to 1 hour review quarterly. they give your entire financial life a review as part of setting up the account so they account for your short and long term goals in a plan. So you get free financial planning. You also can listen into their quarterly market report on line. The information from that report and what your manager provides is more than you and your wife could gather on your own. For a lousy 30 basis points you put the pressure on them to justify their choices for your portfolio rather than you trying to jusitfy your own choices.

My return with Vanguard is 3% greater than the last firm I was with. There is a reason they are the largest mutual fund company in the world

Hey all...

Just been looking at some finance stuff and wanted to get your opinions...

I max my 401K for tax benefits... wish I'd started more in my 20s... (Listen up kids)....

At any rate... curious what other types of investments some of you may recommend...
Happen to have some extra monthly income... and pondering best ways to use it...

Thanks

I do also mess around on e-trade and some penny stocks... (gambling really)....
Max out a Roth as well. Other than that, I'm trying to learn more about investing as well. Dividend investing is something I am very much looking into.

How could you lose 60% of your 401k during the last recession? Only an idiot sold and didnt wait for the market to rebound. If that was you then you lost out on the great appreciation in the history of the stock market. You are the last person that should be giving advice.

Look into dividend aristocrats. These are companies that are solid and have raised their dividend year after year.
MMM, F,
There are many.

My current favorites are Visa and Waste Management. Those 2 arent going away any time soon.
