There’s a quote from Quinn himself saying he’s faster with his hand in the dirt in this video.
I personally think he’ll have his in the dirt a lot. Bears play a ton of nickel.
I would too. When Ogungleye was in the league 4-3 Tampa 2 defense was sill in its hey day.
Both Ogungleye & Quinn at the time of their signings, are similar types of passrushers. Both are/were high second tier/low top tier passrushers that arent quite good enough to be where Khalil Mack is, but more than enough to exploit a one on one &.let O.C.s know that double teaming Mack will no longer serve as an automatic blocking scheme.
Both players had seasons where they played great, both had seasons where they seemingly disappeared.
Teams just werent really running hybrid looks. For the most part it was 4-3 base, with 4-3 subs, & the 3-4 base defense had its 2-4-5 & 1-5-5 subs.
When Ogungleye was singed that 4-3 Tampa 2 defense was dominating. It basically took rule making from Roger Goodell & the rules committee to end the dominance of that system. Starting with the rule against hitting defenseless receivers over the middle..
Even still if Quinn is going to play DE in a 3-4 nickle, it still isnt same gap integrity, as a 4-3 1one gap DE.
Though Im sure theyll run plenty of 4-3 subs.
If Quinn is going put his hand in the dirt in an undersized 3-4 nickle front, it will likely be as a1 gap 3-tech DE. That is alot different than lining up as the 1 gap Ghost 5 tech RDE & 6 Tech Headup LDE that the Bears often ran in Lovies 4-3 with Ogungleye and others.
