Only thing that I can think of is this is a pre-curser deal.

I don't get it though. Doesn't play SS. LF/2B is a ongoing thing and he is .240/.322/.376 type with Almora speed.

Mald had no value but this return makes no sense.

I think he should have played more, not been shipped out.
We lost last night on a pitch that wasn’t blocked.
Need the D.
The team lost on a wild pitch that was spiked short and behind the batter. The best defensive catchers in baseball aren't likely to block that more than 2 out of 10 times.

Kemp can play CF. He's got a -1.2 UZR/150 in 300 or so innings. It's an unusual move as it's basically a 3 team trade but I like kemp. He is more of a high contact guy who's still under control for a long while. He had a 110 wRC+ in roughly 300 PAs last year. He's having a down year thus far but that's almost entirely his unsustainable .233 BABIP.

Ultimately he's the type of hitter I feel the offense needs more of.

Trading Descalso when he is off IL perhaps?

Look I could honestly see them going Happ as the starting 2B and a platoon of Almora and Kemp in CF batting 9. But the team is not better. It is a frugal approach to a championship and it will push them to 4th in the division by Sept.

LOL, they added a better player than they have on the bench and now they are going to sink to 4th in the division because of it now?

OK - Didn't realize it was THAT bad.

I know they couldn't keep three catchers, but I don't like the D from either we have. And we added a guy who is just like many we have. It doesn't hurt us, but it most likely doesn't help.

All we know for sure is he will start the first day he is able to play. :)

"can play" is one thing.

"play them well" is another.

How many poor hitters without plus speed do we need? It's the opposite of adding a specialist with one real tool, like a guy who would pinch run late in games.

We have a whole toy chest full of 2B/OF without a single plus tool, except for Almora's D. None are really good defensively at 2B. None are fast. None have power you can count on. None get on base a lot.

Not sure I agree here. I mean look it's clear they are operating with a tight budget. We can argue whether or not they should be til the cows come home but it's painfully obvious they have very little room to add salary. They've effectively swapped out Monty for Holland on a league min deal and added kemp in the process. For all you can say about Kemp having a down year thus far he's been a 94 wRC+. Cubs CF as a whole this year has hit .234/.322/.394 for a 91 wRC+ and as I said with the comment about Kemp's BABIP, I think there's a lot of room for improvement.

Don't get me wrong, if your point is they shouldn't stop adding then I agree. But to me this series of moves thus far is similar to the Chavez trade last year in that it's sneaky good. Monty was kind of selling low but you were in a position where you kind of had to and swapping him for Holland isn't really much of a down grade IMO. And in Kemp you get a guy who can be a left handed bat not just for 2019 but he's not even arb eligible until 2021. So I seem him more replacing La Stella's role long term and being more useful defensively. And as mentioned I like that he's going to put balls in play as the cubs have too many guys who strike out too much.

Obviously the moves aren't home runs but i mean they've parted with what Hatch and Monty thus far and picked up some mildly interesting players in return.

Honestly I think they need to find a way to move descalso as a way of balancing money in another trade. My hope is that now that they have kemp they have the depth required to do so not to mention I believe Zobrist already started his rehab. Maybe something like prospect + descalso for tony watson.

I would expect a related move. Descalso has to go. I mean, we can't have guys spraining their ankles while sitting!)

I also see "Cardinals are monitoring" Tony Watson. Wonder if there's anything to that possibility.
