Where do you rank it? I absolutely love this movie. It has so many teachings and awesomeness in it. It so nostalgic. What 80's classics you rank above it? I will tell ya. I miss these type of movies. They seems to be no soul left in movies.

I only like the bootcamp portion of Full Metal Jacket. The rest bores me. Ferris is one of the best though.

Ferris is a staple of the 80's, but I'd put a bunch of movies over it, tbh.

Back to the Future
Stand by Me
Poltergeist
Weird Science
Highlander
Tron
Stripes
Spaceballs
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Fast Times
Caddyshack
Rambo FB

etc...

Anything by John Hughes is fantastic. I love how he can go from making a movie like Breakfast Club (another classic), then making a movie like Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I know what you mean by lack of soul in movies today. Part of it is CGI crap, but another part is simply a lack of great film makers..

If we're talking greatest movies of the 80's, unsure if that strictly includes comedies or not. Plains, Trains, and Automobiles is a classic (Tommy Boy before they made Tommy Boy). Others:

Coming to America
This is Spinal Tap
Raising Arizona

1:30am posting I guess.

Missed plenty of others too:
The Last Starfighter
Goonies
The Breakfast Club
Uncle Buck
Innerspace
Better of Dead
The Running Man
Predator
Ghostbusters
Gremlins
Beetlejuice
Planes, Trains & Autos

And two which probably won't make anybody else's list:
Strange Brew
The Private Eyes (You can grunt if you want to, but I believe in Wookalars)
