So coming off the NFC Championship Game in 2010 and over the past 2 years, if you'd asked many Bears fans what the biggest areas of concern on the team were, I think many would have said something like:
1. Offensive Line - Very limited talent and performance level. Carimi injured. Starters - Webb, Williams, Garza, Spencer, Louis
2. Wide Reciever - Little depth. (Bennett, Hester, Sanzenbacher, and Hurd were our depth) No big name reciever (Roy Williams?!), and they are all undersized (Knox, Hester, Sanzenbacher, and Bennett).
3. Tight End - Not a lot of productivity or Depth. Clark and Olsen were gone, Kellen Davis was the Future.
4. A defense that was getting a little older.
5. Lack of offensive Efficiency. In large part due to poor Offensive Line play and no creativity for the play calling.
So what has been done since then to address these areas?
1. Garza is the only remaining OL from then. The entire line has been revamped. I think we're a lot younger and a little deeper now. And the Talent looks much improved. Hopefully that's really the case.
2. Marshall, Alshon, Wilson, Anderson added to Bennett. That's a huge upgrade in my opinion. Wilson will have to prove it on the field and hopefully Anderson will be able to contribute this year, but even if they don't do a lot, I feel a whole lot more comfortable with this group than I did back then.
3. Davis / Spaeth / Adams (Rookie) vs. Bennett / Maneri / Adams (2 years later) ... If Bennett can't severly upgrade this year vs. 2 years ago, I'll be pretty disappointed.
4. Still old in spots, but the LB core has been restocked with some young talent now, as has the DL. Safeties aren't too bad, which probably leaves the CB position to get a makeover in the offseason.
5. New offensive minded head coach and staff. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far in the preseason on offense. It looks effective and loaded with potential. Will a high quality defense suffer without a HC devoted mainly to them? I guess we'll see.
Not bad in two years. Let's hope it all pays off.
