Guy has been doing this for a few months and supposedly making a profit but Krispy Kreme caught wind of it and sent him a cease and desist letter. Luckily they have since relented and he’s free to go back to doing what he does best.

Imagine having to drive TO Iowa to get something. Hopefully Krispy Kreme opens a location or two in Minnesota so that this poor guy never has to go back to that terrible state ever again

I'm baffled how he can sell enough marked up Krispy Kremes to make up for the cost of gas on this.

500 mile round trip

Decent sedan at say 30 MPG avg = 16.67 gallons of gas

16.67 gallons at say avg 2.50 = $41.67 for gas.

Buy say 30 boxes of a dozen donuts 12-15$ per dozen, settle at 13.50$ avg = 405$ for donuts

446.67$ for the whole trip.

Sell each donut for 2$ = 720$ minus $446.67 = $273.33 profit

And I imagine you could sell those donuts for 3-3.50 if people really want them.

Gas isn't a big deal if you have a car with decent mileage, more the maintenance costs if the wear and tear causes breakdowns.

What fucking college kid is selling 300+ donuts a pop?!? There are actual donut stores that would love to hit those numbers.

If you get just 5 dozen, sell for 2$ still profitable by 10.83

My presumption is he is buying a large number of boxes to bring back and sell over the course of 2-3 days.

He must have a market... people are buying them, and he keeps doing it so he must be making a decent profit.

Unless you think he's going there, buying a dozen, coming back, losing money, and doing it over and over again.

A fresh KK is still a damn good donut. Glad they are bringing some back around the Chicago area.

Im just shocked there is an economic niche in the area to make this financially viable.

Hell yeah, especially when they have that neon light on that says they have warm ones.

I mean. personally I would not consider it worth the trouble.

But for him it might be profit = a rent payment...

The link said he'd buy ~ 100 boxes of a dozen donuts and then sell them @ $17-$20 per box. Assuming he spends an average of $8.50 per box and sells a box for an average of $18.50, he'd make a $1,000 profit on the donuts themselves per haul. Subtract the $41.67 (trusting your math and avg gas price you quoted in your area) and his overall profit would be $958.43 for 1 haul. So definitely making a steep profit for each round trip. And doing this once per week or even every other week could make for a decent monthly income.

The questions remaining are does he have a business license and pay taxes on those donuts he sells, both of which I'd assume are required by law? It is, after all, earned income and one could also assume there would be other requirements with the selling of food that he hasn't followed or even been cognizant of. This press may not end up being a good thing for him. I see an IRS audit in his future.
