His value was great for one season. And then he literally disappeared. How many other players making top 10 money at their position have disappeared the way Burton has? At this point in time it’s a bad deal on Pace’s end.

Because he was playing injured

Agreed. But GMs are not 100% correct all the time.

Pace was dead on with both Meredith and Callahan. Retaining those guys would have been a problem if we expected them to produce. He did misjudge Burton's injury for this year.

Not exactly. Meredith and Callahan really would not have prevented anything of substance and we still would have had ARob, Gabs, Miller and Cohen last year at WR and McManus and others to play nickel.

The problem with Burton is yall saying TE is critically important and we have blown it with Burton, Shaheen, Simms, and all the other scrubs at TE. So the issue is not merely Burton but the fact that the Bears have totally fucked up the TE position. You can survive a misstep here or there if you have other good players at the position. I would care less about Burton if he didn't also fuck up with Shaheen and Simms.

Burton will likely be healthy next season. And will likely still be a Bear as well.

  1. Clemson Tigers

That’s fair, but the health of a player before a contract and during a contract are factored into how good the contract is from the GM’s perspective

It'd be nice to get a full contract from everyone with no injuries, I agree.

It would be even better if we didnt blow like 30 million guaranteed at TE only to still not have a clear cut answer at the position.

If he performs well next year, like he did year one. It isn't blown. And it is 22m not 30m

"If healthy" gets said a lot. It is usually to try and see some value in a failed pick or free agent.

If healthy Kyle Long would make a great RG.

Chiefs' offense would be way less explosive without Kelce. It looks a little limp dicked when Hill is out.

Now imagine the Chiefs offense without Hill and without Kelce... it'd be pretty stagnant, even with Mahomes.

And yet that is the situation we have here in Chicago. No NFL caliber tight ends, and no #1 WR. It's no wonder this offense has sucked this year.

If an offense needs a TE like Kelce to function...it isn't much of an offense, imo....

Yes but as of right now it is blown. And I was referring to the TE position as a whole hence why I said TE not Burton. Simms, Burton, and Shaheen are around 30 million blown with again no clear cut answer yet.

It doesn't it just cannot have total no bodies playing the position.

But take certain players away from any offense and it will look dramatically different.

Are you saying Burton will be as injured as Long or are you just speculating future injuries to support your argument.

Can't see any reason why Burton won't be completely healthy for next season. And it's been one injury...although a lingering one. It's not like he's Shaheen-soft, no matter what the "anxiety" trolls say...

According to windy Burton doesn’t want to play football, even though he was going out and playing injured this year.

It sucks players get injured but they do.

We haven’t reached Kevin White levels yet.

I understand ppl being frustrated that he hasnt been healthy. But that's not really an injury you can play through effectively, especially when you main skill is as a receiver.

Wish our young guys could step up quick, but TE is hard to learn in any offense. And if the vets cant learn Nagy 2.0 correctly...how can anyone expect rookie TEs to master it already? I do like their potential though.

The TE position might not be near as bad as ppl assume going forward...

Dont think anyone is saying TE will be a disaster going forward. Think most are saying it is a disaster now.

There would be less concern if Pace and Nagy showed any skill in making personnel decisions on offense and/or TE but for the most part they have failed in that regard.

If there is any hope it is that they may be due for making a good decision at the position given how poorly things have turned out thus far.
