Mendenhall was a first round pick, hardly a "nobody" that rose from the heaping pile of Pittsburgh running backs. He was expected to start from the beginning. I do take your point though, 3rd stringers do rise up whether they are rookies or journeymen vets, they can have an impact on the game...
